Hi all

Stripping down the front suspension to clean up the front suspension bits and get access to the chassis for cleaning.

This sounds stupid, but I can't get the upright/stub axle disconnected from the lower wishbone. I've removed the 22mm not that goes from the ball joint into the upright, and also removed the three long bolts that hold the ball joint onto the wishbone. Used hammers, pry bars etc but no joy.

Is there some trick? And which way should it be done (three bolts or one nut?)

Apart from that, the outriggers look solid (yeah, I know, the bits I can see!) after having a hard poke with a screwdriver (oo err missus), so pennies can go on other bits.

Cheers

J

If you are planning to reuse the balljoint I'd leave it attached to the upright, and separate the wishbone from the joint by removing those three small bolts. If the ball joint is stuck in place with those bolts removed then it will just be paint/muck/corrosion holding it in place and should come off easily with a gentle pry. If this is being done on the car make sure you support the upright so that it isn't pulling on the brake hose, and to help them separate make sure that the weight of the upright is being supported directly rather than it sitting on the wishbone.

Have you disconnected the TRE and ARB drop links? Everything becomes tricky to disassemble because of angles other wise. Put the 3 small nuts back on and tap them to loosen the rust/paint seal on the bottom UJ mounting.

Thanks for the replies. Everthing is disassembled (OK, lots of swearing here) and I have the lower wishbone/upright on the bench, they just dont want to come apart. I'll soak in penetrating oil and see if that helps.

The wishbone is rusty, but it's all surface, a good cleanup and it'll be OK. Seems I didn't buy a basket case after all...........
