Rattles at revs
Discussion
Car has done this for a while now but sounds like its getting worse.
when the revs rise rapidly ie 1st , 2nd , 3rd about 4000rpm you can here this rattling sound coming from the engine , mate seems to think its the tappets not keeping up
It doesnt do it if you build up slowly and i dont think its pinking
any ideas/solutions
thanx

I've had the same symptons from my 500 over the last few months and really noticed it over the weekend at GangontheGreen (cant understand why
), i'm having it serviced this Thursday and my mechanic is taking it out for a "quick" blast. so hopfully he'll be able to identify the problem.
I'll let you no.

got mine sorted , pinking and loose bolts on the manifold.
Could be an exhaust manifold leak.
If you can hear it when the car is stationary, open the bonnet and see if you can pinpoint where it's coming from.
Check around the manifolds for any sign of carbon deposits or bits of gasket moving around. Also check where the manifolds join up with the downpipe, the joins either side of the t-piece are notorious for this and it's very likely these were undone when the engine mounts were replaced.
Always use metal gaskets on the manifold and only silicon sealant.

i have also got that damn tinkling noise and its coming from the exhaust somwhere and i have tried everything to stop it . the manifold gaskets were changed recently by a specialist and they used red silicon sealant with the gaskets , TVR power at coventry recon that the composite gaskets are just as good as the steel ones as they have not had any problems with them ,but my noise dont seem to be coming from there it sounds like its coming from the main cat area, i have tried taking the clamps off at the Y peice and resealing theses and found a crack on a weld on the Y piece which i welded but it still blows from somwhere around the main cat , on idle the noise definatley dont come from the manifold to head joints, why do they always leak on these engines..
chimi500,
I'm still waiting to here from my mechanic, but do you use 95 octane instead of, or in my case as well as 98. Over the weekend it was suggested that this could be the problem. Prior to my service i completely ran my tank down to empty and filled up with 98, having then "explored the rev range" it has made a noticeable difference the pinking has almost gone!!

Would probably say pinking too. Fuel maybe ok but check cooling system and temp to make sure engine isn't getting too hot. Get near 90 degrees and floor it and it'll rattle much more often than down at 70-80. Just had a new rad on mine after similar problems and now runs about 10 degrees cooler and no rattle. Get it checked out sooner rather than later.
