diff or wheel bearings?

i have a small groaning noise from the back at all speeds which sounds like the diff or a wheel bearing.
now i know that you can hear a few noises from the back because of the fibre glass body and no sound deadening ,but do they all have this sound or does it look like i have a few things to sort out , it goes up and down with the speed even with the thing out of gear not very noisey just a groaning sound that sounds like a bearing on its way out, just somthing else to add to the list of things to do...

Sounds like the diff if it does it when not in gear as well. Check your diff oil to make sure that it is at the right level. When was the diff oil last changed. You don't really want the diff to start whining, could be expensive!!
Just looked at your posting again!!!, it could also be a wheel bearing!!!!!, but I would check you diff oil just to make sure!!!

First of all check the obvious - are all wheel nuts tightened up properly?
I once tightened the wheel nuts on my S3 when the wheel was jacked up, but forgot to finish them off once the wheel was back on the deck.
This gives some very funny noises as the wheel becomes warm and starts to move about on the studs!
This may sound far fetched perhaps, but exactly the same thing is reported in an article in this months Sprint.

oil level in the diff is ok so i'm hopeing thats its not that but if a bearing is going there will be some swarf in the oilif i change it , right. does the diff drain plug have a magnetic bit on it . noise does not seem to change on corners so it may not be a wheel bearing . but a diff should not fail at 60k unless its been treated badly and the dealer changed the diff oil about 1000 miles ago at the last big service. do they all whine abit.
Had a wheel bearing go a couple of years back. Groaning got progressively worse but most noticeable at slower speeds (30mph) out of gear (or clutch dipped) withj engine idling. This way you only hear the running gear but still could be diff I suppose. They also found that the half-shaft UJ on that side was knackered too. Not cheap!
I thought my diff had gone, constant rumbling from the rear centre of the car, didn't change with direction as you would normally expect with a wheel bearing. Checked it out in a service and found the rear offside bearing was so badly worn, the wheel was loose and the hub was worn. £40 bits plus labour, happy me. Maybe it's the tubular chassis that sends noise all over the place ??
Got a noise on mine,which sounded like it was coming from the middle at the back but only when slowing down, checked the diff oil first, but then discovered my wheel was hanging off. well not exactly but loose and one stud missing. wasn't sure if someone had been trying to nick the wheels or when it was from last in at the garage a few weeks earlier. Think someone else reported same problem only a couple of weeks ago. When I got over the shock I vowed to check the wheel nuts on a regular basis.
well after all that and sitting the car up on axle stands ( big 0nes ) in top gear with engine running and a long screwdriver touching the rear hub on each side the noise is coming from the rear r/h bearing and not the diff thank god ,yes i know it sounds a bit dangerous if it had come off the stands it would have gone through the garage wall and ended up in the kitchen, but it was lashed down as well, so what car does these bearings come off or are they a TVR special double row bearing, as i tend to do everything myself ..
