On replacing the blower motor yesterday, (NOT A JOB I'D LIKE TO REPEAT) i found a small pipe coming from the transmission tunnel and going through to the inner wheel arch. It looks like a drain for something, it's only a couple of inches long, but don't know what it's for or does????? Can anyone help?

I can't envisage that, do you have a picture?

Sounds like the battery vent, if going thru the wheelarch.

HI guys,

I'll see if i can get a photo, it's only 4mm OD clear pipe, seems to run from a bulk head fitting high up in the transmition tunnel (pasanger footwell) and out throught the inner wheel arch. The pipe is only 2-3 inch long. The pipe can be seen from inside the inner wheel arch, just up and inboard from the bolt head holding the relay/fuse panel. It's the first time i've noticed it as it looks just like road muck or lump of black waxoil.

I haven't a clue what it's for, the problem is it isn't clipping back onto where it come from and needs fixing, but what is it i'm fixing????? Also noticed drips of water around it, so close to the electrics aswell???? Not good.

I don't think it's anything to do with the battery other than it's above it to the right.

But hay keep guessing guys, cos have no idea?

It's to vent the passengers smelly feet. The drivers side does not need one. The poor seal around the door does this!getmecoat

It sounds very much like it must be the battery gas vent. If you don’t think it is the just double check that the battery vent pipe is also in place. It is a small tube, usually clear, the inboard end connects to a small connector on the top of the battery, the other end leads out through the wheel arch as you describe. The battery gives off Hydrogen when being charged; this pipe releases it outside the car.

It is very important to ensure it is reconnected especially if using any form of battery charger when the car is not being used.

Just imagine for a moment – P&J left on charge with Hydrogen venting inside the car. You could have a nasty surprise caused by mixing a small electrical spark with the Hydrogen on unlocking!!! furious

ok, I'll check it out, cos i only noticed it when i removed the battery and fuse/relay board. I never noticed it connected to the battery, but then i'm not sure the battery fitted has a vent point as it looks like a replacment. Thanks guys, let you know.

Ah well, its to tell you how deep the hot water you're in is, before opening the door. You must have removed the graduated scale with the battery..

The alternative to battery vent is the air conditioning has a drain. Do you have A/C?
