About to buy a Chimaera - max £14k
Discussion
Hi all.
Used to own a 450SE and have been on various forums, especially as it kept breaking down all the time, so know a bit about TVR's.
I'm soon going to be in the market for a Chimaera, and have looked around Top Marques/general web surfing at latest sales. It must have power steering and be in excellent condition. I know this question has been asked loads of times on this forum although the answers always seem a bit brief - What can I get for this amount and what should i lookout for? A 4.5Ltr post '96 from a private seller would be desirable.
Any help would be appreciated as i really don't want a LHD Audi TT or anything else for that matter..
cheers,
G.

Seems like there's a fair amount of wishful thinking going on here. Counted 4 4.5 Chims on autotrader.co.uk on a quick scan (admittedly), all in the 16 - 17.25 K range. One 1997 car, two '98s, 1 '99.
All four -might- be dogs indeed, but OTOH those prices seem to be commensurate with the rest of Chims offered for sale. I would expect to pay significantly less for an earlier 4.5. For 17K, I would expect to find one at a dealer's or an outfit with similar facilities, and 3K less for a privately-sold car doesn't seem unreasonable.

I've been looking and Fernies and Adrian Blyth are asking circa 20k (give or take a grand) for a post 96 4.5.
Knock of 3k for a private sale and you are down to what you see in Autotrader. If you don't believe me check out the links from PH's link page. I'm just about to buy so believe me if I could get a decent 4.5 for 14k I would. Unfortunately it's not going to happen.

There is nothing wrong with my car at all. It runs perfectly (most of the time) doesn't leak, goes fast etc. The leather could do with a bit of attention, which I will get round to at the weekend, but other than that there's nowt wrong with it. Just reckon that is what it is worth, that's all, but if anyone is willing to make me higher offer I'll sell it and get a Cerb instead.

Giles, I have just recently (3 weeks ago) bought a 95 4.0 with with history on it and 41k miles . I looked around for a while and this was one of the better examples I saw. I gave 13500 for this and am happy with what I got. It's been reliable and good fun (So far) It made Bournmoth and back in the heat without any problems.
Not sure if you have insurance sorted but I used Sunninghill insurance brokers who were by far the cheapest quote.

Never have had a problem with insurance but I'll add this company to my list to call thanks.
Thanks for all your replies, makes interesting reading. What about the green chim that was on the home page of Piston Heads the other day for sale at £13,500 - the one with the altered front lights? (May have been a 4ltr though).
I could stretch to 16k but really don't want to. I guess from what i have read that I'm best getting a really nice 4ltr instead of maybe a rough 4.5. Is this a good assumption?
Talking of front lights - have many chimps had this done? I think it looks quite nice...
Cheers

It would have to be a rough 4.5 at 14.5k. If you've not driven anything similar before, a 4.0 is going to blow your socks off anyway!

I think you're about right on it Nev at £14-14.5k.. I'd let my 93 4.0l go for about 12.5k so I reckon you're in the right ballpark.
Cheers,
Matt.

Mine's a 1994 4.3 and £14k wouldn't get it.
Blimey! My '94 4.3 is for sale at £11250 with 28k up and lots of TVR specialist history. Its by no means a concours car, neither is it 'immaculate' but it is well maintained and mechanically solid - one breakdown caused by a £1.50 spring, since upgraded! Christ, maybe mine's too cheap!
