Interesting

Appreciate he did not by his own admission buy a minter but it certainly highlights how time intensive it can be sorting out problems

Ahh busted.....bounce

The poor thing certainly wasn't mint when I bought it, by a long (LONG) way - well used would be a good description. That said - it's finally getting there :-)

I've been really enjoying working on it - sometimes it's been really frustrating but it's nice to see the results of my handy work. The only things I've got left now is to re-core the rad, replace the windscreen and recover the hood the it'll be brand spanking mechanically and cosmetically :-)

The one thing that clinched it for me was the completely mint chassis that the last owners had done at the factory before things went pear shaped.

Overall I've spent less than 1000.00 on parts/services (including sorting out my own stupid mistakes - like having to take the heads off 3 times - bloody exhaust manifolds).

If you've got the patience and don't mind grazing all the skin off your hands it can be great fun. smash

Couldn't have done it without the help of the gurus on here - thank you guys!

GLAD YOUR NEARLY THERE NOW. LETS SEE PICCIES OF THE FINNISHED RESULTS.

HOW MECHANICALLY MINDED ARE YOU MB450. HAVE YOU ALWAYS DABBLED WITH CARS OR COULD ANYONE WITH A BIT OF RESEARCH AND THE S.H. BIBLE TO HAND DO WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?. EVEN THE THOUGHT OF FAIRLY MINOR WORK IS A BIT DAUGHNTING TO ME. BUT I CAN SEE HOW SATISFYING IT WOULD ALL BE IN THE END.

I'm not massively experienced with working on cars, I'm a php developer and mysql database admin by trade, but I'm not afraid to have a go at most things providing I've found clear instructions that I can understand or it doesn't matter if it takes me 2 months to finish the job.

The scariest thing I've done so far has been taking the heads off to sort the dreaded sheered exhaust manifold bolts.

The rover v8 engine has been around for yonks so there are loads of manuals and help online and most rover v8 tuning/specialist places are more than happy to help.

My biggest problem was lossing faith in myself. For example I'd convinced myself that the way I'd put my head gaskets was wrong - so I decided I had to strip it down again to check - turns out I'd done it right wobble but better safe than sorry.

I have found the bible quite helpful but also a land rover v8 engine overhaul manual I spotted at my local Range Rover dealer has been invaluable it as all the torque settings I have needed.

I a heated garage and bought decent tools. My one tip would be that these things clickty are great for that one bolt that has been rounded off and done up previously by Geoff Capes.

I didn't get on as well with these stud extractors clickty as soon as I put any kind of torque on they just fell apart and dropped little metal bits where they shouldn't be.
