Selling a Chim.

Bit of a dilemma here so wondering what you lot think.

I've only had my Chim a couple of months and I absolutely love it but I am about to be sent to Russia for a year (at least) with work and there is no way I am taking it with me.

Should I garage it at my parents house and get my dad to take it out for a run once a week so I staill have it when I get back and also keep up the NCB for the insurance?

Should I sell it, put the cash in a high interest account and buy a new one or a Cerb'/T350 when I get back? Are Chims selling well just now (probably know the answer to that, but)?

I am very unsure just now.

Hi Nevin..i dont own a tiv yet but from what ive read on this site they dont like hibernation too much, and can you be sure your pops will run it every week all year without fail for you? personally i would sell and just hold onto the cash for a year, im looking to buy one next spring now and im sure you will be able to pick up a similar spec when you come back for the same cash, probably even a later model...plus you get the fun of buying a new one again :-)

If you're pretty flexible, which it sounds like you are; I would put it up for sale and stick close to the asking price.

If it goes without you having to take too much of a knock, fair enough. At least you won't be pressured into having to consider knock down offers. Also, it might give you some experience as to what the Chimaera market is like out there for private sellers.

I think Chimaera's for sale are like 2 to 1 for Griffs, so you might be up for a bit of healthy competition.

If you don't get the asking price, then I guess it's over to the Dad StartUp plan. I'm sure he won't mind...

I've got an idea. As long as it's resonable spec and color why don't I buy it from you (for less than a normal sale would be as I'm helping you out) on a condition that you have it back after the one year? That way I can save a bit more to afford the one i really want and you have the peace of mind that it's waiting for you on your return having been kept running pretty much every day. We could have a solicitor draw the legal papers etc.

Of course there would be a few conditions and if we did pull this off it would be a miracle

Just a thought as I'm in the Chimaera market at the moment. I could even make up a 'motoring CV' - something like:
Previously Owned - Mitsubishi GTO, TVR 450SE....
Lives: Very nice safe area away form vandals
Drives: Carefully with full awareness of what's around, happy to potter around town as well as stretching the V8's legs on the A roads.

What do you reckon?

Would this in effect be a years free rental for you then??? Hmmm?

I could quite happily draw up the contract though, being a solicitor, but I'm not sure you'd be too keen on signing it.

However, there's nothing to stop you buying it from me, selling it after a year and buying that one you have been really saving for. After yesterday's thread you know how much I am looking for as well

That's my preferred option, the main thing I'm worried about is losing my 3 years NCB and having to start again from scratch.

Why would you lose your no claims? They'd just be on hold for a while.

If you mean you're like 2 months shy of reaching 3yrs NCB, if it were me, I'd keep the repayments up. But worst case, you'd go back down to 2 years NCB.

You certainly wouldn't have to start from scratch. Even if you wrote it off, you'd still only lose 2 years NCB.

The question is how much can you trust your Dad? He might develop a taste for it and start driving it a lot more! Would start with just running it round the block each week, and before you know it he would be taking long weekends away in it, blasting it around the country!!

Yes, he would probably be a touch more inclined to drive it than his Astra, which is a very nasty car to drive.

Anyway, mind made up, I'm going to put it up for sale next month and see if I can dispose of it before the end of September when I head off, failing which it will be sitting in a garage for a year.

Nevin, why don't you *hire* it to Sterling450 for an agreed period and rate? That way HE gets to drive a nice Chimaera for a year that he otherwise couldn't afford, YOU get your car given reasonable use, you get it back at the end of the term and you make some money out of it as well. You would have to add some stuff about accidents and excessive mileage, but being a solicitor that shouoldn't be too hard.
