Just changed the battery (40 mins !! not bad eh) but car overheated on idle after a run out.
Temp was showing 120 degreees. Had the cooling system overhauled last year (new rad etc) and it has been fine since. Didn't look like the fans kicked in. Which fuses are resposible for the fans ? Any other suggestions . Could a relay or anything come loose when I changed the battery ? Help greatly appreciated.

Might have knocked something...

The position of the fuses vary from car to car I'm afriad, and even then there are some unusual variations.

If it's a later car, try the horn to see if it's working as one fan was connected to the same circuit.

Push the two relays on the left (90% chance of fans) and the fuses no 1 & 3. The horn fuse commonly powers the otter switch, not the fans directly (but its like your wipers wont work if the ign is off).

On the later cars, '98 onward, the fans had independant fuses, two fuses fed from one relay.

As stated in the bible... even more complicated than that as some cars had a single 40A fuse fitted for both fans. Some cars were further modified by having a second supply added so that each fan ran on its own separate fused circuit.

Thanks all. Mine is a '98 model.
Looking at my handbook.
Fuse No. 3 = Engine Fan 1 + horns
Fuse No.19 = Engine Fan 2
Relay No. 7 = Engine Fan 1 (M0404)
Relay No. 8 = Engine Fan 2 (M0404)

Now to go and have a look !
