Help! Need a new Steering Rack
Discussion
The Chims just been in for a service & they have told me the power steering rack is on the way out & have advised me to fit a new pump when having the work done.
Have searched on the Web, the only place I can find which advertises Chim racks is Racing Green, priced at over £700 for a refurb rack (exchange) & over £300 for a new pump.
Is there a cheaper alternative to this, has anyone had their own rack refurbed & refitted, was it ok?
Advice please...

For non TVR stuff in the past with no problems at all, there is at least one person on here that might not be so willing to recommend them.
You pays your money............
I previously had a PAS Chimaera and had nothing but trouble with leaking rack and joints, even after 2 supposed rebuilds it still dropped fluid from the gaiter. Have had a Non PAS now for the last couple of years and would never go back, a little heavier when parking but very little effort needed once on the move. Small price to pay for a lot less hassle.
I appreciate what you're both saying, but I really think my partner would struggle without the PAS (Shes only small)!
Also, I feel I payed extra for a car with PAS & will be a bit annoyed if I end up having to convert to non PAS due to lack of funds
I've managed to find a company who will refurb the rack for £120 Plus VAT (including collecting the rack & bringing it back)
It will cost an extra £80 if they can't remove a certain component,(Can't remember exactly what they said) which sometimes seizes apparently...
This includes 12 Month Guarantee (For whats its worth)!
Going to get a quote for the labour when I've picked up the car from the Service place
The Service Mechanic did say he didn't recommend getting the rack refurbished (I assume this is because it doesn't always work, or the Refurb company doesn't do the work properly)
I have just seen that Racing Green do an original TVR rack for £888 inc VAT (Not a refurb) or a new Manual rack for about £526
So, I guess I either take a gamble on getting my rack refurbished, or I get a new one
Think I'll wait & see how much the labour is going to cost before I make a decision....

Just been down this path, demoralised at initial quotes and being told that it was irrepairable by various "specialists" then had these guys recommended:
So I can second
http://www.power-steering.co.uk/
they can also provide a fitting service too which may be handy for you as located at greenwich. If not turnaround by post (in my case) was superquick.
ps paid for mine to be picked up only to be told after being checked that it was u/s - ended up off road for over two weeks in the end. I would have saved a week if I'd sent it to above first.

I've never understood peoples argument for not having PAS. They are heavy to steer without, it is only once you are up to speed that you loose that weight and the strain you put on additional components when you don't have power assistance is enough of a selling feature for it alone.
Manual car's are also probably less desirable to the second hand market and I it always seems to me it's those without PAS who beat the drum of purity and simplicity, and those with PAS say, yes, yes, hear what you're saying and then promptly get one with PAS or have it repaired and move on
I've driven mine without PAS, and although it has different gearing to a manual rack, and I run 225 fronts, it was horrible. I have also driven it on track without the PAS when it blew up in the morning, and it's not a pleasant experience. It was harder to hold onto a high speed changes of direction and I didn't need a work out as well as the driving experience . .
Th only argument that stands any validity to me is that of simplicity, that's it as far as I can see.. . .

Thanks guys
Is your rack still ok BB?
A few people do seem to be saying its not a good idea to get a refurb done & it usually just starts giving problems again
Mine has been rebuilt 3 times, by the same builder at their expense. It is now back in the car and working, thinking we have finally solved the issue with the rack.Is your rack still ok BB?

I'm now so good I can get the rack out in less than an hour, and will happily explain to anyone who wants to know, it's easy.
If it was beyond repair I would buy the £888 original one and flog the other on Ebay as a leaking PAS rack to egt some money back.
I only have mine re-furbed after it had done 52k miles and it was leaking, then we went through it bloing up after the refurb, and now it is back working OK again.
Stick with the PAS IMHO
Well i have driven both, and there is no way i would be without it,the car feels crude and dated unassisted, and i am sure this post will be p*ssed on but i dont care,if the stock PAS rack is built properly there is no reason for all these problems with leaks etc after a rebuild,it as obviously not been assembled with care thats the only way the leaks occur, seen this happen more times than i care to remember the TVR rack is no worse or better quality than another PAS rack except for japanese racks they are superb quality, but i wont go into that though.
