Evening all,
I use Optimax in my 4 ltr Chimaera.
My youngest son (21) and I had a chat this weekend about Optimax. He has informed me that several cars have had some serious engine failures due to this fuel-I have now changed to Super Unleaded just to be on the safe side.
It seems that it has a reduction in it's octane rating
while in the cars fuel tank!
Do we have a future proble with this?
Two of the cars that had blown engines are Ford Cosworths!!
Any thoughts?
Cheers

We can't get Optimax in Ireland - North or South - I have to run my TVR on Guinness and Black Bush.

this has been discussed at length on scoobynet - there is a response from shell on there as well IIRC.

Who's to say the cossie engines weren't going to go anyway? Most of the people that have had problems have been running tuned turbo engines.

The fuel recommended in my handbook (1994L) is 98 RON. The only petrol at that rating is Optimax so I use it whenever possible (98% of the time). No problems in the 17k I have had the car .

Likewise in use of Optimax on my 93 Chimaera.

Wonder if we will get the Shell V Power now on sale in Germany - 100 Octane Unleaded

I seem to remember something similar happening with Shell back in the early/mid 80's with their Formula Shell petrol. Reports of blown engines, burnt out valve seats etc.

I used to use 95 unleaded but have recently started to use Optimax - I can't tell any difference in performance or fuel consumption. However, Optimax makes a noticeable difference to my Alfa 156 - loads more grunt.

Perhaps it's a smear campaign by the opposition!
