I have a 97 500 with 40k on the clock.

It's an absolute beaut of a car. Immaculate on the outside: no stone chips, no parking rubs on the corners, no cracks, no dings - you know, good nick.

The inside is much the same. Good standard, half hide, no cracked leather or anything. The only thing I will grant you is that you either love or hate the combination; Moonraker with bordeaux hide.

I've been giving more and more thought to getting a Tuscan, and went out last weekend to see a couple of Tuscans at a couple of dealers with a view to p/x my Chim.

The first TVR dealer gave my car the once over before coming back and telling me that he'd be pleased to offer me 10k. 10k?! I had to remind him that my car was the black Chimaera outside, and not the Primera next to it.

I drove straight down to the other dealer, who promptly agreed a p/x deal for a shade under £17k.

I have not typoed. There really is over a 65% difference between the two prices - which makes me think: What makes a dealer conjure up the gall to make derisive offers like the first dealer made? It isn't because they couldn't do with mid age Chimaeras - as they stated they "could do with getting some", and as you're all aware, they sell the quickest.

Are some of you guys actually taking knocks this hard when you p/x?

10K is absolutely shocking. They should be ashamed of themselves.
I can't believe anyone would be so stupid as to accept such a bid so they really are just sending customers away.

10k = shocking.
17k = exceptionally good. Was this a main stealer?

( mistyped that intially and wrote 'mean stealer')

In order of preference: one was a main dealer in Sussex, the other was a main dealer in Surrey.

I completely agree with you, ohidunno. Being told something like that is insulting - and insults live long in the memory. Now, if I ever see any cars advertised on their forecourt that I otherwise would have been interested in, it won't even occur to me give them the trade.

I too am in the market for a used Tuscan and went to see a non franchised dealer in Sussex (possible the same one!!). For a 96 Chim 500, 36k miles, in OceanHaze with a few stone chips, full leather, biscuit magnolia interior, PAS, equally (almost) immaculate I was offered 12K. At another non franchised dealer located further East, I dreamt of a machine like a Tuscan (can you guess where I was?) and he offered my circa 15K! That's not quite such a large difference, but when I was expecting circa 17k I was a tad surprised to say the least!! guess I'll be waiting for spring and then selling privately!

Normally, for a p/x, I would expect less than a private sale. 15 probably typifies what I would expect to hear from a dealer for 500s our age, probably even a touch less if their forecourt was swimming with mid age Chimaeras.

I don't think 17 represents a typical p/x value at all. I just think I happened to have a combination of (a) a nice bloke and (b) a nice bloke who already has a couple of people waiting for a mid age 500, so he knows he can turn around a quick buck.

It's just interesting how much dealers can swing the p/x quote for exactly the same car on exactly the same day.

Don't forget that a lot of the variation on p/ex comes from the car you are going to buy, and how much they can afford to knock off the margin.

10k still poor but 17k might indicate that the car you looked at had a bit more margin to go.

When I bought the TVR I got offers that varied 2k on a Polo!!
