Age old problem the dreaded Chim wing mirror. Mine got KO'd by somebody clipping it whilst I was at work.

I have sourced a whole new mirror assembly and got it painted. Now, it's ready to go back on the car.

However the problem I have is re-attaching it. The old turret was a write off and I cannot use it to unscrew 'mirror pivot' from the car. I tried putting the new turret on it but cannot get the cut down allen key in the gap to tighten it up.

I have tried using a large flat bladed screw driver in one of the slots ot move it round , but refuses to me.

Any ideas, is ther a tool for this?

Put the turret on the door, wind it back half a turn, use the extra space to get at the grub screw and lock the turret onto the mirror body, carefully tighten the turret onto the door by turning the mirror. If it comes tight with the mirror in the wrong orientation undo it again, adjust the position of the turret relative to the mirror and try again. Be careful not to overtighten and break the new turret.

You would have thought by now that someone would have made a replacement boss that sticks up a bit more, even if an extra sleeve was required to hide it. It always looks as if the mirror stalks are not long enough anyway..

This may seem a bit of a dodg, but it works
Slot the end of the turret thread so you can use something flat resembling a wide screwdriver to undo/tighten.
While the mirror is off the car, tighten the grup screw and dummy fit mirror(may take a few goe's to get the grub srew in the right position with trial and error)untill you can feel its within a quarter to an eighth turn of fully tight.
Take off and a apply a very small amount of sealent and reset in to position.

It may be a pain to take the interior door panel off occasionally, however I was not prepared to risk damaging the new paint, as in all of the hundreds of hours rebuilding the Griff, this grub screw saga, was one of the biggest head f..ks.
And remember if do use this method,do tell the next owner...smile
