I'm trying to remove the transmission tunnel cover on my early model Chimaera. It has the gearlever, handbrake and door knob all in one hole. The gear knob came off very easily but I'm bewildered as to how to remove the door knob.

The problem is that the gaiter for the three levers cannot come off without the door knob coming off.

There is obviously an obvious way but it's not obvious to me. Obviously.

Can anyone help?

Looking at mine. I think you push the gaiter down to expose a big nut (sounds very wrong!). Then hold the nut still with a suitable spanner & unscrew the knob.

Derek, have a look at Don's post (fourth one down) from this thread. If I remember correctly you'll need a 0.8mm allen key.

Nope! Def no alan key on the early ones, mines a 93. I'm 99% sure it just screws on. The nut is there to hold the spindle still & avoid straining the works.

The damn grub screw's socket has been rounded. Looks like I'll have to drill the thing out.

Never heard of that before, maybe some one has stuck a later model knob on an early car?

No idea of the area you're working in, but can you use a dot punch to get it started?

Derek, could it be that it's bigger than I thought, or simply a different size?
