Hi all
I had to replace the upper steering U J joint the other day and after a little huffing and puffing and a couple of skined knuckles got it sorted, only to find that the steering lock wasnt working and the steering wheel was 180 degrees out?? i double checked that i had followed all my marks for realigning every thing on reassembly and found the U J was made with one joint the oposite way round,so now ive got to buy a puller to change the steering wheel and find out what ive done to the steering lock?
any ideas??

Are you sure you put the UJ on the right way? 180 degrees out sounds as though you have aligned the marks the other way round. did the steering column move in any way when you removed the old UJ?

You have set the steering shaft in the steering column to high or to low(easily done)by doing this the steering lock pawl is not engaging in the slot on the steering shaft, try and loosen the new UJ/s clamp and move the steering wheel up and down in the column slowly(ignition in the on position)until the steering lock engages in the slot when you remove the keys and rotate the steering wheel, remember to do up the pinch bolt/s on the UJ/s,jobs a goodunthumbup

Thanks guys
The marks i made before starting lined up but the new joint was made 180 out so i thought it best not to ignor the marks i made incase it threw somthing else out, the steering colom looks like its in the original position but i must have knocked it out , i will have another look at it,theres no rush as its off the road as the rear drop link mount has snapped off
