Hi all,

I'm quite fancying a chim at the moment but they're totally alien to me in terms of their quirks, common problems, things to look out for etc. Having done the japanese cars to death, I'm more than ready for a step into something a bit more special feeling for a little while.

I'm sure it's been asked 100 million times but the search facility seems to be kaput.
So, rather than bore you with the usual questions of what to look out for etc, is there a buyers guide or the like available that provides a sort of "Chims for dummies" approach?

If not I'll be forced to pick your brains as I've sort of set my heart on one unintentionally, and despite my concerns over reliability it's going to have to be used as a daily driver for a month or two until my new car comes through.

Cheers,

Stu

Id rather you bore everybody to death with the questions!!!!!!! i intentionally bought one in ok condition to drive daily all weathers (well nearly) its reliable and keeps the grin on my face!!! my advice is put a few days weekends and petrol dosh aside and go and see 5 maybe 10 different chims in the price range you can afford you will notice different characteristics in each one then decide or pop along to a reputable TVR dealer have a gander there. also for £30 grab copy of the STEVE HEATH BIBLE off ebay read that twice thru before deciding

Cheers for the tips! fully intend to bore people with constant questions, just thought some reading material so as to get some fundamental knowledge of the cars would be advantageous before embarking on a quest to buy one hehe

Try www.tvrbooks.co.uk. Buyers guide and a lot of other info. The 2nd Ed bible is £33 brand new from the TVRCC.

Also look here: http://www.chimaerapages.com/

There are lots of us using a Chimaera as a daily drive with no reliability problems at all.

Until that comes through the post, give this site a read:

http://www.chimaerapages.com/

Should answer alot of what you're wanting to know. The best advice is to go out and drive em. I only test drove 2 Chim's but the 2nd one i drove really did feel absolutley perfect for me the second i sat in it to the moment i buried my foot on the loud pedal.

The 1st one i drove was exactly how i didnt want a Chim to be. So it pays to look around and drive them before buying, each one is different.

Good luck smile

Thanks for the advice guys, very much appreciated.
Seems there's a little less than I envisaged to look out for when buying one, though outriggers seem a bit of a concern.

I've ordered a copy of the bible and shall study it every day hehe

Ray: yeah was hoping to get up there soon but i'm without transport for a little while as some kind scrote decided to break into my motor, nick stuff and cover the inside in spray paint. So that's off getting sorted. I'll maybe have a pop up next week on the bike if the weather sorts itself out.

Cheers again folks.

chaps,

I've got my eye on a few at the moment and I'm struggling to decide, obviously I've not seen them all, or in fact any of them but I'm hoping there'll be a diamond amongst the rough so to speak.

Anywhoo there's one in the classifieds which is a 430, and looks promising. Spoke to the guy on the phone last week, meant to call back on saturday but didn't get a chance (chap at peak porsche if anyone knows them??).

The car is a 430, and so far i've only been looking at 400's and 400HC's, is there anything I should be aware of when looking at 430's? just wondering if there's any problems specific to them etc? best to look at 400's or is the 430 better? all I know is they have slightly more power but that's it, I'd take less power for higher reliability for now !

Cheers,
Stu

Stu, why not come down to the big TVR bash at Chatsworth at the end of April, (27th I think), and speak to a few owners. Failing that, your local meet.

Also, as has already been said, get yourself Steve Heaths bible. If you decide not to buy, you can always sell it on for the same that you bought it for no probs.
I've got a copy of the bible winging it's way to me as we speak biggrin

as for the bash at the end of april, if I can make it I'll be there but I'm looking to buy in the next week, fortnight at the absolute max. I want one now biggrin

I know the guy at Peak Porsche, he has his cars looked after by Ian @ TorqueRVT.

Also you have Tony @ HHC - been in the business for as long as I have memories - I bought my Sagaris from him.

You cannot go wrong with either of these 2.

sorry Claire I missed your post.

Tony I've been recommended by a few people, as much as I'd like to get up to hexham and pick his brains about them I fear I'd be wasting his time, as their cars are generally pitched outside my price range. The next one, which I'm sure will be a cerbie, will definately come from there, but for now I'll just be using them for servicing etc.

The car from peak porsche sounds interesting, and is on the list of possibles, sensible milage on it and I'm told it's in good nick with FSH and will come with a years MOT, so provided things like chassis are sound I'm happy. There's a couple of others I'd like to check out too smile

No worries...used to being ignored tongue out

Whats the car from Peak Porsche just out of interest....if the plate spells a northern city - then I know that car very well and the owner.

Tony is good for advice as he knows the score with all the range.

right now it's at the top of my list smile

Interior wise the missus used to work at jaguar doing leather interiors, so she knows her onions. It'll cost me a kitchen, but I'll ask her to sort the leather in whatever I get biggrin
