After breaking down with no fuel pump running, I changed the relays. All seemed to work fine and then today it stuttered and bloody died again! No fuel pump, fiddled with the relays and the first one started buzzing like a maniac, I disconnected it reconnected it and still nothing, I then moved it around from left to right, almost bending it in it's seat and bingo it works.

Problem is there's obviously something wrong and I don't really want to venture out if it dies again. So, does this sound like a bad earth, poor connectors, something else I haven't thought of?

check the female spade connections(both relay multiplugs)are gripping the male connections on the relays properly, because the connection is across five terminals it can give the impression that all is ok,but that is not always the case,it only takes one poor connection here and your in troublethumbupthey can be tightened up with a small screwdriver, what you are trying to achieve is get them gripping the male terminals better on the relays.

If it works by man handling it into place then I would have thought the problem is more likely to be a bad connection in the socket/connectors or the actual relay itself.

ETA: too late, that TD is such a smart @rse hehe

I tightened them up when trying to diagnose the problem with the old relay, it was strange though that as soon as I put a new one it was fine for about 100 miles.

Will have another go though - I might just chop the connector off and hard wire them onwink

Check the connection between the connectors and the wires, if you have a loose one it doesn't matter how tight the connectors are on the pins it will still play up.
