I would have changed plugs 1st anyways, that includes any motor with a misfire(generally the cheapest 1st call too)chimsmart said:

just changed plugs so all obvious culprits now changed . i gather the air feed pipe in question is the hose from the front valance to the airfilter.i took the car to rpi in norwich and they were v helpful but as they were gettin ready for a show they didnt have time to look at it. read a few comments about cleaning the stepper motor but not sure what that entails. thanks for the sugestions

Just out of interest how much did you pay for your rotor arm? robchimsmart said:
cannot find reciept but think it was £18 got it from rpi with other bits, andy
Ok it sounds like a genuine one then? the main reason i asked is because it does sound like an electrical misfire, this is generally a poor aftermarket rotor arm, or your dizzy amplifier, just make sure the rotor says lucas on it, honestly the times people have chased problems due to inferior electrical problems is unbelievible!!Hi Chimsmart,
It is a shame RPI didn't have enough time to sort you out., They fixed mine a treat and Chris really knows the Rover V8.
I have been through this before myself and am a qualified auto electrician and obviously have a sorted 1996 400 Chimp as well.
I am 15 mins away from RPI, so If you are near them and have time I could pop over. Email me phil.nelson@10-42.com.

had another strange thing happen, when starting up from cold the other day the oil light stayed on so i stopped the engine and checked the oil ,it was ok . since then when i cold start the oil light stays on for a little while and no oil pressure is shown. after about a minuite the oil pressure comes up and the light goes out ,it normally runs about the 30 psi but when cold runs higher until engine comes up to temp. the chim certainly has a few niggles l8y should i be worried
