my fans come on at about right temp but they dont seem to actually cool down the engine, im wondering if the fans just prevent it getting really hot or should i see the gauge dropping and how quickly?

Gauge should read 80-90. fans should cut in and out not stay on unless very hot day. If not then your rad and cooling system needs checking out.

Make sure they are sucking not blowing, one of mine was wired back to front and the connectors were factoryeekonly noticed it while i was doing something else, strangely enough the car was fine in trafficrolleyeswho knows how long it had been like thisnutswhen your fans cut/in the gauge tends to just stay stable rather than a leap to the cooler part of the gauge,as long as the gauge dont keep creeping up then its OK,i have a guy who comes to me with only one fan working on his Chim,i told him about it but it appears its been like it for a while with no problems(yet)frown

its had a new rad on it recently but left it to idle and it sat at about 90 without getting any cooler, i guess im slighlty concerned that in the heat of summer it might struggle a bit. how can i safely tell if they are sucking or blowing so 2 speak??

Stick a feather duster (important garage tool) behind and see which way the feathers deflect...

Some otter switches have temp range settings that come on late and stay on for a long time, others come on early just for a short time. You should also rev your engine when testing at a standstill as at idle the coolant is not being pumped around so much..

a feather duster thats a new one on me for tools of the trade! if they do happen to be blowing what can i do? is it something that might have been done wrong on the recent rad change?

Read the part number off the offending fan and check with manufacturer that it is a pulling model. If it is then just reverse the polarity on the connection.
