Alarm buggered - not a popular neighbour
Discussion
So last Saturday night at 1.30am the std alarm on my 98 Chim malfunctions and goes off. I couldn't turn the damn thing off and end up with a flat battery. Unluckily for my neighbours the backup siren battery clicks in and it goes off and every hour until MR AA man kills it at 5.30am!!!!!
I heard the std alarms were crap - says it in my nearly acquired bible! Anyway, has anyone else had problems with their alarm and if its been replaced what make is recommended and how much is it?

The previous owner replaced the alarm on my 96 4.5 with a Clifford 300 with extra features. I've now got remote locking (I'd hope so too) remote boot opening, remote headlights (useful in a carpark if you can't remember where you parked) and best of all remote start. How cool is that? Starting the car from xx feet away as you walk back to it. Nice.

Not a function I'd recommend. Great for Automatics, which are aimed at mindless people 4K miles away, so that you can't start them unless they are in "park". But a manual TVR which you just hope you'd "not-left-in-gear" as you activate the "remote start" function. Just doesn't bear thinking about - 240BHP/270 Ft/Lbs just merrily moving under its own steam in a car park.............;-/

I only leave mine in gear when it's parked on a slope. Plus I don't make a habit of staring the car before I get in it. Don't like the idea of someone else hopping in before me, even if they can only get 1 minute down the road.
HOWEVER it is bloody good for impessing the mates, as if a Chim wasn't enough for that already. Plus I didn't pay for it (directly) so I'm not fussed

It's actually illegal to have a remote start on a manual (except as I'll describe next) so keep that one a bit quiet - intended to be so that fat-arsed yanks can get their cars air conditioned cool before they waddle between their air conditioned offices / houses and the car.
The *NEW* Clifford remote starts are slightly different in that they can be fitted to a manual box car (and are legal for such an application) because to be able to remote start the car you must have *STOPPED* it in a certain order which is I think:
1) Stop car, pull on handbrake *DO NOT* switch off engine.
2) Hit "arm" button on remote
3) Now switch off engine (and I believe now the engine continues to run)
4) Get out of car, arm alarm from remote, doors will lock and engine will be killed.
It's basically just a foolproof to make sure the car CAN'T be in gear when you get out.

Oh ... and for relevance to the original posting - go for a Clifford.
I've *NEVER* had problems with a Clifford other than with a siren which got drowned and they swapped that over immediately. I used to know a guy in their R&D department over here in the UK and he was really fastidious in himself so I would tend to trust their kit in general.

I considered a Cliford 300 with boot opener some months ago then read this

I don't want a Cliford anymore.

No probs with mine. Unless the alarms been annoying the neighbours while I'm away
As for the remote start. I didn't buy it it was there already, I never really use it and haven't made a habbit of it. I too am worried about the whole 'have I left it in gear?' scenario. As for the fuel pump, it does actually prime them. You can hear them spool up for a second or two before the engine turns over
