Hi all was thinking of buying a set of SP12 alloys but

the price is putting me off. I have just seen a set of Pro Race 2.1

at my local Halfords at a good price £649 inc tyres and fitting, they

look virtually the same apart from the team dynamic logo around the rims.

Is there any differance in the above?

Regards Ady

What tyres are they??.. be very careful as i doubt they will have the correct rating for insurance purposes. If they are only V ratings then you must tell your insurance.

It was an easy choice for me as I did not want 18" rims on the rear - from my experience I've never noticed a significant performance increase for the addition cost and harsher ride.

So it had to be the Pro-Race 2.1's which I ordered in anthracite with Toyos in the following sizes:

2 x 17x7 ET25 with 215/40 ZR17 ToyoT1R
2 x 17x8 ET37 with 245/40 ZR17 ToyoT1R

I kept the original TVR widths and got within a couple of mm of the original offsets without having to compromise with spacers or special orders. Comparing prices to the other option I essentially got the tyres for free but I do have the slightly garish "motorsport" inscription and did have to do a great deal of research, neither of which are necessary going the SP route.

Another issue was that I had a great deal of stress getting these delivered on time. I was calling the manufacturer almost daily and had to collect them myself to be ready in time for Le Mans after the expected lead time was doubled due apparently to some production issues.

Would you mind posting up a couple of close up pics (front and rear) when fitted please?

Ady, looks like great minds think alike, I have been trawling the web looking for wheels for months and have decided to go for either SP12 or Pro Race 1.2 myself, I know some people are saying that the SP12 deserve to be a higher price and don't dispute that but i like the idea of not paying a large ammount when you can get the same wheel with tyres for similar cost.

Hav'nt been to halfrauds yet - do you know if they will sell them as two 2 wheel sets as the offsets will have to be different to fit and plus the rim width front=17x7 Rear=17x7.5 (or possibly Rear=18x8)?

Do you know if they will do Toyo TR1 tyres ?

I personally think the lettering on the rim doesn't look too bad but I am looking and getting the wheels in black so it doesn't show as much.

Have seen in this months Redline Magazine that new this year is the Pro Race S 1.2 which comes in black with coloured rims Red/Blue/Yellow, these rims have no lettering on them - not to my personal taste but wouldnt take much to re-spray the rims to match the spokes.

Dumfunk, The picture in your profile with the wheels on looks great.
Where did you get them from was it Halfords? and was there much hassle getting different offsets as part of the package?

Regards Gary.

There is also some mileage in the knowledge that the SP12's are especially made for the TVR and dont have that logo on them. Whereas the Team Dynamics...well, says Halfruads to me biglaugh End of the day if you can afford the SP's then go that route. Otherwise get what you can afford.

I bought my wheels via the always helpful Neil at TVR Car Parts down in Devon and there was absolutely no issue with offsets (other than the 2mm compromise on the rear). There's a bigger photo of them here.

Just ordered a set of Black Pro Race 2.1 from a local independent dealer.

Went for 17's all round x7 front and x7.5 rear - matched the offsets almost spot on for front and back,
asked for Toyo ZR1 front 215/40 & back 245/40 all in £780.00

Have to wait 10 days as they are coming from the manufacturer.

Decided I can live with the lettering on the rim for the time being but will have them disappear whenever they need a refurb.

Will post pics (if i can work out how) when they are fitted.

Don't mean to worry you but isn't 7.5 a little narrow for a 245 tyre?
On the Toyo website for example the minimum width for this section is 8"

Dumdfunk,
Got a bit confused talking to the tyre shop guy - think he said either 40 or 45 cant remember but he was going from previous experiance and a chart, I know nothing about tyres so have put my trust in the shop, the guy seemed to know what he was talking about (and i would hope so), will find out when i go to collect the wheels.
Thanks for post, hopefully all will be fine.

Thanks all for the input, still deciding on which
route to go down I know SP 12 are the prefered route
but at £846 +tyres + fitting compared to Pro 2.1 coming
in at £649 inc free Toyo tyre upgrade and fitting at Halfords. They will also allow different offsets.

Dumbfunk your wheels look good are you pleased with the ride and handling?

GtvR Please let me know how you get on with the new wheels
look like you are a bit braver than me still cannot decide
and dont forget to post the pics. Bet you cannot wait for them to get here!!!!

It's difficult for me to make a valid comparison as I fitted new suspension at the same time but the secondary ride quality (over smaller sharp bumps) seems very acceptable - certainly better than my new 3 series Coupe that runs on 18"s (albeit runflats!).

It was my personal view at the time that the additional sidewall stiffness of an 18" wheel did not justify the great increase in cost of wheel/tyre or the loss of ride quality. It is worth remembering though that if you wish to keep the big rear/small front wheel set up on the original Griff you'll need an 18 rear and this narrows the price difference between the Pro Race 2.1s and the SPs.

I'm very happy with my choice.

I have the Team Dynamics, also. I just wanted a 17" wheel so as to get a decent tyre in the right speed rating, so I wasn't bothered about the lettering. I must get some centres, too;

They look great! Report back on the handling differences if you can.
(Do make the brakes look puny though eh?)
