Fuel pump problem????
I have a 98 Chimaera which is used daily and has done 58,000 relatively trouble-free miles. Now, usually after slowing down following a strong run, the fuel pump starts chattering and the 'mil' light flicks on and off in time with the clicking noise from the pump. The engine stops. Switching on again and the same clicking noise even when all has gone cold. I have drained the tank, removed the pump and set it up to pump petrol which it does but I can't measure the pressure. The filter was changed about 8000 miles ago. Do I need an new pump or could it be anything else?
Update: I have disconnected the fuel pump and switched on. The 'mil' light flashes in time with a click from the passenger well. A relay (Petrol pump?) is switching on and off about 3 times a second. Removed relay and connected a bulb across relay socket pins (relay removed). Bulb flashes. Where does the power to the pump relay switch come from??? Answer to this or any other ideas much appreciated.

It depends as they changed over the years. But typically the relay's coil supply is ignition swithced via a fuse. It's ground connection is effected by the ECU. Certain ECU faults will cause the MIL indicator to light, so it looks like an ECU problem on the face of it.

I'd start by checking the ECU connector and the corresponding plug are clean and dry.
