SP9000s are nearing the end of their life so I'm shopping around for new front tyres. Is it acceptable to fit V rated tyres instead of W/Y/ZR rated? The likelihood of me exceeding the V rating of 149mph is non existant and apparently (according to the tyre dealer) the speed rating is not part of the MOT.

I'd check with your insurer as they could fail to pay out if they spotted it. Get it in writing as well & remember to do so if you changed insurer later on.

BTW - whats wrong with another set of SP9000s? Got a pair fitted to the front of mine last month for £68 each.

I got mine from Huntingdon Performance tyres in Godmanchester, Cambs but I'm pretty certain that e-tyres also had them in stock.
I got HPT to price match the internet price.

I got some SP9000's last week from blackcircles.com, fitted for about £70 each (Tyres delivered for £60 each, fitted at a local place for £10 each). My local ATS wanted £100!

As mentioned - The wrong speed rating may invalidate your insurance.

Toyo R888, Avon ZZR,Dunlop Sport 9000, Michelen Pilot Exalto 2 all in 205/50/15 rated W or greater

so the tyres are out there.... or inform the insurance the company that you are running a lesser speced tyre.... most seem to accept it

Certainly mine (Barclays) only stated that the tyres must be "road legal" on the car, and thus I presume must pass an MOT test.

No, they must pass an MOT test and conform to the vehicle's Type Approval to be 100% 'safe'. Lots of stuff that's not 'road legal' in se is not getting picked up by the MOT procedure - or MOTs would take a whole day and cost £350 with little or no 'added value' to road safety and emissions...

They should be fine, just keep it under 150. If your worried just tell your insurance company, better to be safe and ensure cover is not affected. Mine said it was fine for road use, but would not cover me if I wanted to take it on a track. I never tracked it so wasn't an issue.

Thanks for opinions! However........... having done a bit of trawling around I have found a source of SP9000s at £69 fitted and balanced!! which is cheaper than a lot of the V rated ones hehe

OK, where can I find the Type Approval for a Chimaera then?
