Can anyone tell me what the 'MIL' light is for
There's a switch which turns off fuel in event of accident. The MIL light tells you it's been activated. The inertia switch warning light tells you when the inertia switch has been activated. It is a seperate warning light.
The MiL light refers to the ECU, and is highklighted when a sensor input to the ECU is outside of operable range and causing the ECU to run in limp home or derivatives of it.
For example, if your AFM get's full of water, the readings will go haywire, the ECU will go to limp home and the MiL light will come on to tell you there is a sensor fault. You then shopuld get a code reader to identify and affect the repair.

Thats the one the other side on dash panel with 'i' on it. Found my book at last the 'MIL' is fuel injection fault but what is the light connected to.
Could be any of the main sensors/injectors to the ECU. My experience was it was 95% of the time the AFM. But that was my car.So I junked the AFM and now the MiL light is a redundant light in the dash which I can decide what to do with . . . Shift light is hidden somehere else and so at the moment, it's there but not in use . ..

What a dope I turned out to be!

On the one occasion I had a fault code showing, the MIL light did illuminate. That was for the mythical purge valve fault that is not a fault according to some wisdom. When removing redundant wiring for my ECU swap, I did come across wiring of the same colour and connections (to the old ECU) as the schematic I was using indicated was the 'fault light'. It's now in a bucket with a ton of other stuff

Did yours blink as part of the ECU test ? I certainly cant get my 1992 ECU to do this with a Chimaera chip fitted. Im getting a fault code reader shortly, so Ill pull the AFM off to make the ECU fail, check the code, and see if the light comes on.

Gary when you removed your wiring have far did you go, did you just take it back to the connectors behind the dash or right back to the light ie opening the top dash loom.
I took as much back to the connectors as I could although I have left the tails in for the purge valve, the redundant speed sensor link (ECU one, not speedo) and a number of spurious earths on the basis they might be useful. I didn't disturb the loom inside the dash top but may do so whenever the dash comes out for replacement. You'll be amazed at the amount of stuff that is 'surplus'

It was a steady light and that's what prompted me to plug the reader in... I'd been completely leathering the car on a PH run as it happens and the light came on on the way home
