I started a post a little while back asking for advice on why my manifold bolts kept coming undone.

The follow up to this is now after replacing the washer and gasket with ones from clever trevor all has been well...so i thought id follow That Daddy and That Spends advice and nip them up a bit.
All was going well until the passenger side second top from the front started to spin after a little tighten eek. Ive left the bolt in but im sure ive stripped the thread.

Could a new thread be fitted without stripping the engine down?

Do you have room to get a tap in there if you take the manifold off? If so (and if you managed to avoid c*cking it up) in principle you could fit a thread insert in situ.

http://www.wurth.co.uk/medien/section8.pdf these are a brilliant bit of kit, regularly used them on stripped sump plugs and plug threads(ham fisted fitters)the only thing i will had is when fitting the insert is to use a dab of threadlock before fitting onto the external threads, similar to helicoils but better IMHOwinkdont sweat it as long as you can get the retapping tool in the space you have available, even if it means manifold removal your laughing, check the other threads while your at it and remember better to nip up occasionally than to overtighten in the 1st place, remember its only ally, good luckthumbup

Sounds like you have stripped the thread in the head. Remove the bolt and try a longer boltsmile I'm assuming you didn't use long bolts first time around.

I've not clicked the link but as it's Wurth, I'm assuming this is a plug for their Timesert system and, if so, I would endorse what TD says; have used them loads of time to great effect and it used to be claimed that Rolls Royce used their inserts on all fasteners into ally. No idea if that's true or not but wouldn't surprise me if so 'cos they do work a treat.

That said, the kits are expensive (a comprehensive set of drill, tap, cutter and thread finisher is needed to set the insert in place) and having used them, I really doubt there's anything like enough room in the bay to do it in situ. Best bet may be to ring Wurth and find out who local to you buys loads of their inserts and go show them the job. Not a huge ordeal to pull the head concerned if the longer bolt idea fails is it?

There's enough meat in the head to tap the threads a little deeper ( about 4-5mm) which I've done in the past to recover the short bolt stripped thread scenario

Thanks chaps ive got some idea now..

Going to try boosteds idea first does anyone have any ideas of bolt length so i can determine whats length bolts ive got fitted?

Failing that i`ll take down to a local engineering shop and let them do it.(cheers Geoff will give them a bell)

If ive gotta take these censored manifolds off again im definatly gonna fit ARP bolts.

^ Remove a bolt from the front of the head and measure itsmile Then see how deep the hole in the head is.
