Oil pick up 'O' ring ?
Discussion
Changed sump gasket and took oil feed pick up pipe off to clean it out.
Put it all pack, started up, no problem and good oil pressure.
When going to empty my oil drain catch can, I noticed a 12mm rubber ring
( O ring ?) laying in the drain area.
Did this come from the oil pick up pipe ?
Is there meant to be a ring around the pipe where it enters the block ?
Or is there an 'O' ring in the filter which I also replaced ?
Or on the pressure switch, which I removed to get to a sump bolt ?
Edited to add, I am pretty sure its of the Oil pressure sender. Can anyone confirm that their should be a seal ( O ring) ?

I can't remember how the pick-up pipe seals to the block its either a rubber ring around the pipe and the pipes then held in by a bracket or there's a flange on the end of the pipe with a gasket.
However ALL pick-up pipes should have a seal of some sort where they enter the block.
If you can't remember fitting one, I'd say its sump off time again.
However if your car is a pre-serp then its probably worth packing the pump with vaseline and trying again as the pre-serp's lose oil priming at a drop of a hat

My oil pick up pipe has a machined groove in the face for an o ring but has a steel gasket, fitted.
If there is no gasket or seal between the block and pick up pipe, rest assured it WILL suck air in at some time and starve the engine of oil very quickly.
I dont wish to cause panic, but it would be sensible to check it rather than take the chance that it will be all right, because it is very importrant.
I ruined a 944 engine years ago because of a tiny pin hole in the long pick up pipe.

ok i am hazzading a guess here it is a serp engine due to you removing the pressure switch to get to the front sump bolt? this does seal via a rubber o ring, the pick up pipe just has a flat gasket, so the chances are it is from the oil sender unit, however if you didnt change the gasket from the pick up pipe when you took it off you should really be doing it again with a fresh gasket what 50p.
Thanks Rob, yes, its a Serp '97 500'and did I put a new gasket on the oil pick up pipe and used some thread lock on the 2 bolts. I was suprised that I couldnt see any form of sealing on the pressure sender (must have fallen off without me noticing)so I used a bit of "instant gasket" when I put it back on.
Will I lose much oil if I take the sender off to put the seal back on ?
