My job for the next few days is to take off the manifolds to replace the gaskets and have a small crack welded (quite how I'm going to get to the bolts on the passenger side, I don't quite know yet!!). I thought it could be worth removing the precats while they're off.
I was hoping to just bash the hell out of the precats removing most of the honeycomb, then if possible use a wire brush to remove the remaining bits.
Has anymore done this, or is it not possible.
Any advice?

Give them a good shake, they might just fall out. If missing, check in the dustbin cat. Horrible job...I plied my aussie neighbour with beer and let him bash the bejasus out of mine as he thought it looked like fun!

If I remember correctly, the problem was the honeycomb material squishing together and becoming a solid mass that just soaked up the punishment. The best 'tool' for cutting and removing the stuff was a length of thinwall tube with a sharp knife edge ground (and reground from time to time) on the end. Also reaching in with pliers or grips and 'twirling' the loose ends of the stuff out like how you would open a sardine can was fairly effective... but bye bye forearm skin! (I said foreARM!)

I did mine last year and it wasnt too bad, long drill bit makes life easier, (get one from the G10) drill loads of holes and bash out. Anything left can be pulled/pried with long nose pliers. The manifolds can be a bit of a pig to remove. I welded a couple of spanners at odd angles to make it easier, also using studs to replace the more difficult bolts to access, when replacing the manifold helps. Are you going to Chatsworth? If so you can borrow mine, or ill post them to you if you wish. They are sitting in the bottom of my tool box gathering dust.

cheers sapper, the spanners would be a great help. I don't think i'll be at chatsworth because of work and its quite a drive from minley.

Does anybody know if any of the tuning/TVR companies offer pre-cat removal, and if so......any idea on cost????

Thanks,
Dave

To get you started thumbup try the V8 Enhancements website under miscellaneous. I would link but am not allowed! rolleyes

They offer a service where you send them your manifolds and they'll remove the precats and return them to you in 4/7 days for £95.00 inc the VAT & postage.

However if you've gone to the effort of taking off the manifolds in the first place, in my mind you may aswell remove the precats yourself as that's the easier job of the two. Messier (sp), but easier yes

Would it be crazy to try and remove the pre-cats while the manifolds are still on the car?
Hoover out the debris before replacing the 'y'?

Socket with a hole drilled in the side big enough to pass the pins through, that you first release from the plastic housing by pushing in the little tang on the side of each pin. Make a note of the positions/wiring for reassembly. Or slot a suitable socket with an angle grinder along an entire side but watch out for the socket spreading/breaking if the probes are tight

Similar to pupps, I undone the pins from the socket( make note of where they went) and then threaded them through socket and used molegrips on the socket to get them undone....
Box spanner will also work...

Tired last night, I ended up cutting the wires to get the sensor off. I'll solder it all back together prior to replacing the manifold and cover it in heat shrink
