First noise has been around for a while...whilst braking (usually at walking pace) in first gear with clutch in or out I get a rattling sound from either the gearbox/clutch this is quite noticable outside of the car i.e louder with the roof off. Oddly it does not happen if I brake in any other gear. Clitch and 'box appear to work fine

Next noise nearly had me in tears. Started the car last week (fully loaded up for long weekend away of course) I started the car reversed it out of the garage with no problem. I turned it off went indoors for 5 minutes and came back out and restarted it...kaboooom from the offside exhaust followed by rattling sound from 'zorst when revved. Not wishing to add to wifes argument about buying a focus instead I said nothing as she was out of earshot at the time and drove off down the M5 :d:to Torquay allbeit with a loud rattle whenever I booted it. The noise has since stopped, but a chap at work has had an exhaust explode due to a bit of cat breaking off and lodging resulting in the trapped fuel vapour igniting. Could I be looking at the same fate? Would that qualify me for the most spectacular way to go at 110 sorry 70 on the motorway?

All ideas welcome!!

Hi,

Have you still got the first noise? It could of been something in the exhaust rattling its way down and led to the explosion.

Yeah, but what?

Most likely gonna be part of the Cat honeycomb if the original noise was heard near the gearbox as the silencers are rearward of the gearbox. Probably worth dropping the exhaust off the manifold headers and taking a look.

I've heard that cats can disintegrate and baffles come loose, so that would seem to be a likely answer.

Maybe rev the nuts off it and see if you can blow all the crud out the back? (only joking).

Yes the first noise is still their when braking in 1st gear and possibly similar sound now when in reverse! I thought the exhaust rattle had gone but have just nailed it down the local test route and it is still their. It may be intermittent as it was not their yesterday.

I have just booked it in for it's 48k service so will probably pass over a handful of credit cards and a rabbits foot as well as the car keys.

I know you were joking about revving the bits of it but I have sort of tried that, no debris yet.
