Sorry - me again!!

Our car is making a funny noise [electric milkfloat] and it has been suggested that it could be from the alternator. [Thanks to everyone that replied to my previous thread]. We have made arrangements to get the alternator checked and tested but we can't remove it from the engine. The other half has just taken the two bolts out and there are two sleeves in the casing? Any ideas how to remove these? We are supposed to be dropping it off to him tomorrow afternoon so anyones help would be much appreciated.

Looked in 'the bible' and can't seem to find anything about it.

Sounds like it has a couple of locating sleeves - I would expect these to pull out fairly easily if you pull the alternator forward. It may help to lever the alternator gently away from the casting it is bolted to.

Alternatively..........why not run the engine for a (short!) while with the drivebelt removed? If the noise goes away hey presto - or it's the water pump!

Spot on Leadfoot, the other thing is that once the belt is off, even by the spinning pulleys by hand you can usually hear a bearing that is noisy.

The two sleeves stay on the alternator, don't try to remove them.
I had trouble getting mine off, turned out to be just a very tight fit, try using a lever of some kind. I assume yours is a serpentine engine with the poly V belt?
Disconnect the battery before you try to move the alternator, it is very easy too short the large terminal on the alternator to ground.

Thanks for your replies. Managed to get it off o.k. It was just a bit tight. Hopefully the alternator will be sorted out and we can drive the car again without the embarrassing electric sound!!
