Mayo in Oil filler cap
Discussion
Hi guys,
Got a slightly strange one for you.
I have done about 350 miles since getting the car back on the road and admittedly it has all been short journeys...furthest has been 14 miles....and that was once...the rest have been 7 miles to work and then 7 miles back again. and the temp gauge never seems to go above 50 deg apart from once when i was stuck in traffic. So i am going to put a slightly warmer thermostat in.
I had a look inside the oil filler cap and there was some slight mayo...cleaned this off and the next day i drove to work. As soom as i got there i stopped the engine and had another look. There was no mayo but a little bit of water on the inside, like condensation.
I am not losing any coolant as i have kept that measured for about 2 weeks now since i first noticed it.
any ideas or is it just a combination of cold weather, damp conditions and short journeys....???
if it were losing coolant i would have changed the head gaskets or partially stripped the engine to have a look.
Cheers for any thoughts
Andy

I had the same thing did an engine rebuild and not used it much and had a little mayo, thought the worst.
Check your rocker cover bolts to see if there tight, I fitted the rubber gaskets on the rebuild and the car had so spend a few weeks outside, there is a floor in the rubber gaskets as there profile holds water and if the rocker covers are not tight (I forgot to check after the engine had been run a few time after rebuild) the water gets sucked in. When I took the rockers off there were little bits of mayo all over the roof of the rocker covers and condensation yet the water and oil are ok.

Its short journeys guys, the engine oil is not getting hot enough to boil off the moisture in the oil,the fact the rocker covers are big slabs off ali and are giant heatsinks if the engine does not get up to temp, outcome is mayo on the filler cap and inside the r/covers,the moisture will tend to collect around the breather outlets as thats the mayo,s way out,as the waether warms right up this becomes less of a problem, what i am really saying is
