I'm looking to take my Chim 400 away with me on a possible move to Germany. So does anyone currently own a TVR in Germany, if so, how hard it is to get it serviced and repaired and what is German tax and insurance like? Finally is there a German TVR owners club or organised events?
Cheers

Hello Gary, I had a 400 Chim in registered in Germany until lately and I will have another on registered soon. I suppose you are coming here to serve the forces, so the first question is how long will you stay? you can as far as I remember use your car over here with your english reg for up to one year, but if you still have an "official address" in England and go there once a year anyway, you can use this for MOT and tax and go on for ages. this is not 100% legal, but nobody will object.
if you want to go the official way, you need new car documents, I can give you a copy of my german logbook, that will make things a lot easier. To get these documents your car needs a full german MOT (TÜV). Then you need to change the headlights, rearlights ( yes, the foglamp has to be on the other side)and maybe you have to have two electrical circuits for the brakelights. thats it, but it can vary between MOT stations. going this way your english logbook will be destroyed and lost. concerning costs: In germany every vehicle is insured, not the driver as a person. As you are below 25 and therefore with only a few years of driving wihout accident, the premium will cost you alot.
sorry I do not know the english terms, but insurance that will pay the other if the accident is your fault will be about 800 Euro/year. an insurance that will also pay for your TVR will be an additional 1800Euro/y, Tax for a 400 is about 600 Euro/ year. this full insurance is very hard to get as no German insurance has ever heard of a TVR. therefore the premium can differ up to 50% between companies, but the prices I quoted are already very good ones. it is more likely to go up another 15-25% due to your young age.

Here are two places for service
- TVR Deutschland in Hagen
- Classic Wheels in Berlin
There are proabably one or two more, but I don't have details.

Maybe check with the people from the car club
