One of these may be it:

1. You fitted a new battery , did you reset the alarm ? You need to disconnect the earth on the battery, leave off for about 5 seconds then put back on then immediately press the alarm plipper.

2. Could be a stuck relay in the immobiliser. The accepted temporary cure is to hold the key in the start position and thump the underside of the dash on the passenger side a few times.

3. Hot start problem - is the engine warm ? Open bonnet, leave for 30 minutes then try again. Does it now start ? If so it could be hot start problem (do a search theres a kit you can fit to fix it) or starter on the way out

Are you saying you turn the key over to crank, pump primes but it won't turn over?

In other words the only thing wrong is the engine will not crank?

Maybe a dead starter motor or solenoid.
try bypassing the starter solenoid or applying 12v directly to the motor side of the solenoid (use jump leads if poss)
or you could try a mechanics favorite tool smash

Cheers. AA fitted battery, reset alarm with key fob, engine ran sweet all the way home. Turned off ignition at home, but went to restart five minutes later, no go....I armed the car, disarmed the car, entered drivers seat and turned ignition on, fuel pump normal loud whirr, but no cranking over. Battery good, so must be alarm problem....

Have you tried it once the engine has cooled down - if it is OK it could the famous hot start issue?

Might be, but doesn't have to be, you could have a simple starter problem.

Many thanks all. I called Carl Baker and he ran through diagnostics over phone. What a cool bloke. Car booked in with him on Monday. All things being well it is the dreaded hot fix poroblem. Approx cost £180 for new immobilisor.
