Yet another confused tyre hunter...
Discussion
I need some new tyres from my 2000 chim - currently still have the ones I bought it with last Nov. the old ones are 205/55 ZR15 (Goodyear Eagle F1) on the front and 245/45 ZR16 (Bridgestone Potenza S-02) on the back.
Have read around through the forums and am thouroughly confused! I know Toyo's are well regarded, but I'm not going to go that way as I don't like the idea that my insurance may not approve, so it appears that most people are either after SP9000s or Faulken FK452s. Looks like Faulken's are no longer around, but I can get hold of SP9000s for the front no problem. However, when it comes to the rear, things seem more tricky. SP9000s don't seem to come in the 245/45 16" combinaion. In fact, very little does. I did find one page offering S02s as follows, but I read on here somewhere that the proper S-02s are not being produced any more and that the new ones simply have a similar name, so I'm wondering if they're maybe not suitable.
BRIDGESTONE SO2 (HIGH PERFORMANCE) Tyres
BR S02 N3 Z
Premium brand Size: 245/45ZR16
Otherwise, what should I get? Do I simply fit a larger size of SP9000? If so, doesn't that affect the performance? Any other suppliers/options that I missed?
Why does buying 4 lumps of rubber that will ultimately be spread evenly over several thousand miles of tarmac have to be so hard?!
Cheers... Nick

Insurance companies are aware of the problem but still ring to ok it.
SP9000 on the front falken FK452s on the back is the usual answer. Looks like your rears have been swapped for something different than it came out of the factory with. I have 225/50 ZR16 as per factory spec which are £58.60 each right now.. they dont do them in a 245/45 ZR16 size as you have already spotted

These guys http://www.event-tyres.co.uk/?=gtyres will give you a good price for SP9000's all round in the right size and speed rating, and will fit them for you at home. I use them for all of my cars now.
Get a good quote from elsewhere, ring them up to make the booking, and tell them what price you need.
Good luck

From other postings here, I understand that these tyres are Bridgestone SO2 and NOT Bridgestone SO2-PP. The tyre compound and construction between the two are different and the SO2 is not suitable for our TreVoRs. BRIDGESTONE SO2 (HIGH PERFORMANCE) Tyres

I called my insurance co and they said that they didn't mind, and put a note on my file. I now have Toyo Proxies T1-R 205/55/R15V on the fronts. Must make sure I don't exceed 149mph for more than ten minutes....

Looks that way... Did not realise that before today! Guess I need to tell the insurance company that so while I'm at it I could ask about the tyres! Anyone else on here made this 225/50 to 245/45 change and have experience of what my insurance is likely to do. What are the advantages/disadvantages of 245/45s over 225/50s? Is the handling better?Edited by bigdods on Friday 9th May 17:20

Non PAS cars has 205 fronts and 225 rears while PAS cars had 225 fronts and 245 rears. Not sure about the wall sizes though.
My 1998 500 with PAS has 225/50 fronts and 245/45 rears.
The handbook should tell you what was fitted as standard.
Maybe someone else can enlighten us with the full story.

As far as I am aware the tyre width was different depending on if the car has PAS or not.

January 1997 handbook says ALL cars should have:Non PAS cars has 205 fronts and 225 rears while PAS cars had 225 fronts and 245 rears. Not sure about the wall sizes though.

Rear: 225/50 16"
Front: 205/55 15" (except Chimaera 500 with PAS: 225/50 15").
Is there a later version of the handbook with different specs?

I have a PAS 450 and it has the tyres as sepcificed by the handbook. Its been said many times that PAS cars had 225/50 on but mine doesnt - maybe they had run out of 225's the day they made mine....
My 2000 4.0 PAS Chim has 205x 15 at front and 225x 225 on the rear. As specified in the handbook.
They still have Pirellis on as they were new when I bought the car and I contacted my insurance as thay are only Z rated and not ZR.
There was absolutely no problem they didnt even want to take note of it. Only problem was that I would have an issue if I had an accident when going at more that 149 MPH and a tyre caused a problem
I did insist though that they make a note on my policy.
Probaly not everybody's choice of trye and also not mine but they seen good in the dry and wet.

Hmm. Looks like asking for non-Z rated tyres shoudln't be a problem, but any ideas on how I word the reason for why my tyres are not the standard width when I tell my insurance? My year 2000 handbook lists 205 (front) and 225 (back), like they others here. No mention of anything different for the PAS versions, which mine is...
Any idea what 245s will do to my handling. Is it likely to improve or vice versa?
Cheers.. Nick

What's standard width/size? Unless you bought the car new I don't know how you could tell; the handbook cannot tell you.Any idea what 245s will do to my handling. Is it likely to improve or vice versa?
Originally Chims had 205/60/15f and 225/55/16r. Fronts have also had 225/50/15 fitted and maybe some had the 215/50/15 original Griff size. Rears have also had 225/50/16, 235/50/16, 245/45/16 fitted. (Plus other sizes that I haven't heard of I should think.)
The PAS story is a red herring. Whilst most of the PAS cars had 225f tyres some had 205f and whilst most of the non PAS cars had 205f tyres some had 225f.

I wouldnt worry about the wording just tell them what is fitted and if they have any objections they will tell you. They deal with these issues everyday.Any idea what 245s will do to my handling. Is it likely to improve or vice versa?

Not sure about the handling but plenty on here have 245s on the rear.
Unless your doing track days or ' road racing' I cant imaging that there will be much noticable difference. A lot depends on how you will be driving it!!
Trev
I knocked this Wiki up the other month if it helps any, Standard Wheel and Tyre Size Combinations, please feel free to modify.
From what I've noted with the several TVR factory combinations, they always seemed to have been around the 10-14mm rear to front height difference, whereas when people mix & match sizes, you can end up with some very different ride heights.

If you are still interested the bible on p329 quotes Chimaera 4.x (PAS) as front 225/50ZR15 and rear 225/50ZR16 from 1996 on.Any idea what 245s will do to my handling. Is it likely to improve or vice versa?

Non PAS have all got 205/50ZR15 on the front including the 500.
The 500s PAS & non PAS are quoted as 245/45ZR16 on the rear after 1996.
