I drove the old girl into the garage last week and noticed a stream of oil dissapearing into the garage. I quickly identified this as power steering oil. On inspection the steering boot on the drivers side had spilt and had filled with oil.
I ordered up a new steering boot and oil seal. Today I removed the old boot. What faced me was some sort of white washer / bush that looked like it sat into the steering rack. I assumed this should have sat back into the rack, but it pushed in easy and I'm sure that it would pop out again easy. It was nothing like the steering oil seal I had purchased and had expected to be greeted with. I assume the steering boots should not be filled with oil and I cant just fit a new boot?

Can anyone offer any advice on the white bush and if it is stuffed where I can locate a new one?
The suns shining here in Torbay and I really wanted to be driving it. frown

The seals are usually fitted from the inside to the ends of the centre tube(normally meaning a complete strip is neccesaryrolleyes)that white nylon bit may be a rack lock stop(is the car fitted with non standard wheels)or may be a guide sleeve that as come adrift, most power racks are similar but i have not had the satisfaction of stripping my one yet for any reasonredface and your right about the oil going into the boots this should not be and is most certainly due to failed rack end seals as you have noted.

I had the same problem 2 weeks ago and it meant a full rack strip out and refirb as it was the seals in the ends of the rack that had gone.
