Thought i would give you my opinion over to fit or not to fit one FIT ONEthumbup
Read on hear the positives on fitting one and as i suffered from alot of bonnett movement at speed quiet scary at times.
Also the negatives problems over speed bumps decided to get one.
What a difference done a fair bit of driving this weekend and NSL speeds and above no bonnett movement at all brilliant.
I'll just be double cautious with the bumps i also fitted it the right way round lip sticking to front.

does it have any positive effect with stability at lepton speeds?

mine feels very unstable, and i have no spoiler

Difficult to say at the moment struggling with shock setup.
At the moment car does sway at front above NSL you have to really grip the wheel when it gets like that i just back off i also have a problem with crosswinds.
The bonnett problem has to be seen to believed amazing mod.

Er?

Fitted as standard (to later cars, maybe). Good for very high speed stability, st for speed bumps or steep drives. Cheap as chips, and re-fitted for free if you put it back in your boot when it gets ripped off (dealers have seen that one before!).

But fk-all to do with bonnet movement...

Drive my car then madand there easy to fit 5 rivets and you don't have to be rude.
If you don't agree fare enough but to swear that's out of order.

Apologies, Paul; I wasn't trying to be rude, though I was/am a little baffled by your post.

The lip spoiler, if it is still there, is riveted under the metal bit between the front wheels; Sorry, but I'm not mechanical enough to know the proper name. It improves stability at very high speeds, and it doesn't like bumps. Yet I've driven a Chim(p) at 140+ without the lip spoiler (it was in the boot) and it was ok, though I felt it was about as fast as I wanted to be going in her.

But it isn't attached to the bonnet at all - that is hinged at the front, and has a single lock near the windscreen. If the bonnet is still properly attached, and still has the rubber 'feet' (windscreen end) it shouldn't move too much.

Here's a thought: As the Splitter is designed to create downforce (said vortex), it will in effect prevent too much air from going under the car by forming a 'wave', distorted from that created from the original profile of the car, that grows in front of the car as its speed increases aiding this downforce.
But; in doing so, will it not be creating a semi vacuum effect in the engine bay thereby not only preventing the bonnet lifting but also aiding cooling in that the hot air will not be sealed in / pushed upwards into the engine bay but pulled out, or at the very least have a better chance of escaping?

I had a look and the Splitter is yet another item missing from my new Chimaera! I do however have to negotiate between 8 and 19 speed bumps to get to the main road depending on which way I go so I'm not sure if it will be a worthy or long lasting addition should I decide to add it. I may well make it removeable (velcro? - just kidding) as I intend to run her on the Autodrome here once I've put some air in the tyres.

Since I lost my splitter to a brick, my Chim does seem to be running probably 10-15 degrees hotter (water levels look good, no leaks) - of course it may all be down to this warmer weather of late.

I think what you've described is exactly how it's designed to work and that's why people who have replaced a missing item find that in some cases it stops bonnet movement at speed and in other cases lowers the running temperature significantly.

How deep is the lip , it looks to be about 1". I'm surprised that creates such a difference over speed bumps - but obviously it does. I think I'll get one and see how long it lasts.

Hard to say whether it's just down to the warmer weather of late but since mine got ripped off over a speed bump the running temperature has increased by about 10 degrees. It will be going back on very soon to see if it makes the running temperature go back down.

Withour doubt the lip splitter considerably reduces bonnet movement on mine -but i keep ripping the bugger off!

I am looking at fitting it on hinges, with some form of bungee type material attaching it to the front of the car. The idea being that when it clunks against a speed bump, or whatever else, it "gives" moving with the hinge, but the bungee springs it back into position.

The spring/bungee needs to be sufficiently tight to keep the splitter in situ at speed, but with sufficient give to allow the splitter to roll back.

I'm hoping to get this done this coming week-end, and will report back.

Anyone else done anything similar?

I hope Julian at Fibreon will not mind me saying he has designed a road going half splitter for the Chimaera which he will be showing at Roar 08.

The team at SC Power are also working on a full splitter for the Chimaera.

Hope this helps

Not the best of shots, the splitter on this car has now changed and has 100mm of extra depth, which is needed now that the ls1 has been supercharged.

Also interested in this for my chimaera. Since mine came off too.

On my Mini Cooper S Convertable it has a plastic splitter fixed to the inside of the bumper just in front of the front wheels. What about someone producing a 7 or T shape stiff soft plastic extrusion that would bend a little rather than immediately rip off. Clonked a few speed bumps in the mini and it is still there.

All reasonabe offers considered for the Copyright of the idea hehe
