My Chim 500 has slowley developed a power steering problem. It started getting stiff when turning lock to lock. Then i could jump in the car and it would be fine, this is now not the case as it is really stiff all the time now.
It is easy to turn for the first half turn either way then stiffens right up.
I have changed the fluid as this was like water, but this has had no effect, if anything it is now worse.
I checked the pump by removing a hose and it had quite a bit of pressure behind it.
The steering rack seem ok, no notchy bits or bangs,
i have also checked the uj's on the collum and all seem to be fine.

Any info or ideas will be great.

Thanks James

Got to be ready for Le mans

Does it change if you increase the revs? If it improves it points towards the pump, if not then the rack probably needs a refurb.

Was the fluid black? That points towards seals. The best way to be certain is a pressure test if you can find someone locally to do one. The good news is racks can be refurbed if it is that, takes about a week to turn around including couriering etc.

No the fluid looked fine just really runny, was like water..
Where is the best place to send the rack to, and what sort of cost?
Thanks for the help so far.

I don't know about the best, but I had mine done a couple of weeks ago here:

http://www.power-steering.co.uk/

Came back painted black which surprised me as I didn't ask for it, so if you don't want it repainting make sure to mention it! It's £130 for a refurb. Can't recommend them unreservedly as mine still has a minor problem although that could be down to "newness". To balance that out it had all new track arm bushes, a bronze bush made to repair a loose piston, new seals and new gaiters for the money.

At the limits of travel pump pressure can be hundreds of PSI, are you certain you have adequate pressure?

Why are you all saying its the rack, get the pump pressure tested 1st,if the fluid is black thats a sign the pump internals are failing(unless the fluid as never been changed, very commonrolleyes)if the pressure is low check the resevoir before blaming the pump it may be nothing more than the internal strainer being clogged, although the pumps can fail, just remember incorrect diagnosis off either is costly frown get it checked.

Just jacked it up and still has the same problem, really stiff lock to lock.
Checked the UJ's and it's them.

All done,
Got under the car, sprayed them with WD40, smacked them with a hammer, greased them up..
Now it's back to normal clap
