Multi piece targa roof discussion

Just what a TVR needs, another joint for water to get in.
personally, i do not like the idea, or the look and can not see any useful point in doing it.
If you thinking it will be easier to store, then maybe easier to simply practice the art of storing it. 2 pieces are going to rattle around your boot like mad i think.
sorry, this idea is not to my liking

The thing is as a Chim owner you may not be seeing the full picture here. One of my reasons for buying a Chim over a Griff was the roof/boot situation. With a Griff when you take the roof off and put it in the boot you have very little clear boot left. Ok for normal driving but not much use for driving around Europe for a few weeks at a time, which we have done several times.
Forgetting the almost unavoidable golfing jokes, the Chim is better than the Griff in this respect and the Tuscan is the ultimate solution. If a split targa could be done properly it would be a good idea, particularily for a Griff. I would not like to be starting off with a painted roof though so for me it would be a no no.
All IMO

But the point i see is:
if you have a single piece roof, it takes up the depth of the width from your boot.
If you have 2 pieces, then you take up twice the depth of your roof, thus leaving you with less space.
the only advantage would be in the width of the space, which is not going to be any use what so ever is it ?

Sounds good to me. You're going smewhere with a full boot and you want to take top off/put it back on. Unless all your stuff is packed neatly into one bag it can be a pain in the arse to get it all out to get the roof out. I'd love a roof section that could fit on top or go in and out without having to remove everything else first! Quite often I have stuff across the whole boot space, but not the whole height.
I'd buy one, but not painted though...

Right.....Maybe your replies were at the wrong time i.e. before someone with an ounce of intelligence had posted !!
Ian was asking advice/opinion !!
I am sure that if anyone does produce a 2 or 3 piece roof it will sell well, at the right price. (if its not cheap enough it could be worth than some of your cars
1st dig, you should ve bought the classic in waiting ) With a full boot a 2 piece roof fits on top, very handy for those heavy downpours when a fully laden unpack is required to get the roof out !! Yes, i will be pissing myself as & when your clubs & kit get a soaking !! ................
Sorry i cant be arsed to re-write everything i typed & lost earlier & the digs weren't as polite !!!
Ivan/Nick
I agree with you about painting the roof
but then i would as mine is covered

I have to admit I forgot about the different way the roof panel is stored in the Chim vs Griff.
When the panel is in the boot of a Griff it sits at an angle with the back of the panel upmost and against the tank and the front of the panel on the boot floor and against underneath the number plate.
Therefore, when I travel with a full boot I have stuff behind the panel in the gap between it and the petrol tank, and in front of the panel - well more like on the panel.
When it rains though it is a major league pain, as the contents of the entire boot - including anything shoved behind the panel - has to be removed before the panel can come out of the boot.
I've had the car coming up for 4 years, I'm not a novice owner as anyone on PH will know from the work I've done and documented here on PH.
Now I've explained that I take it some of you will take back your comments such as learning how to stow the panel.
If you read the entire post you'll see this is a spare roof I'm working with and my original roof was recovered a year ago and is pristine.
Now, after a year of thinking it upside down and back to front I'm doing this anyway, but wanted to avoid the 'oh you should have said' type comments after I'd done the job.
As Del Del Del says, I'm not looking for your appreciation or approval, just your ideas.
If you don't have something to actually add to the discussion, please don't bother contributing because its only going to be ignored.

Chaps,
Just my two pennies worth..... I currently own two TVRs' a Chim' and an S3 (which is being collected by its new owner tomorrow...) I love the two piece design of the S3s roof. Granted, it has been made in two pieces because the boot on the S3 is about a third of the size of the Chims'. What I particularly like is the ease of handling and the options that it offers when packing the boot (essential for Le Mans trips..... Also, the roof on the S3 never leaked, not even a drop of water came in the car. I think that a similar system on the Chim would work well. Now if only somebody would make one with a carbon fibre finish, that would look cool.....
Cheers,
IanM

You haven't actually seen a roof in the boot of a Griff have you?if you have a single piece roof, it takes up the depth of the width from your boot.

The Griff owning OP has included the Chim forum for extra input in the idea since they share the same panel, using the two heads/forums are better than one theory, I can't see a problem with that.
First i shall apologise if my swearing offended any of the genuinely helpful posters.. As for the diggs

You know it would be marvellous with a fully packed Chimp boot as well
Del, the original post said he would like an opinion, just because you didn't agree with the other posted opinions there's no need to throw your toys out of the pram.
This is one of the worst aspects of Pistonheads - seems your boot is as small as your mind - other peoples opinions are allowed to be different to yours, chill out a bit man!
IMHO I don't like the look of the split roofs iv'e seen, I think the line down the middle spoils the look and have alway found with my Chimaera I have enough room in the boot for my needs..
Oh dear iv'e had an oppion, so Ready for the really clever, well put retort from Del or just swearing if thats all he can do...

The OP is after techical input/ideas/suggestions on how to go about it getting this done, he is not asking if it should be done, that has been decided. As a Griff owner he is coming from a different direction, see my previous post.As far as the PH thing goes, one of the worse things about PH IMO is you start a thread asking which blend of Tea you should buy and someone will post suggesting you drink coffee instead. Suggesting the coffee is not being open minded, it is called not understanding what the question was, which can be frustrating.
As for the swearing thing, there is a thread running somewhere about Del's medication being in short supply, when topped up he is almost normal, well, as normal as a Griff owner can be

I read the original post on a train that was late, cramped & rather hot ! not an excuse for swearing I know Del Del Del said:

as I said I’d also just written a much longer reply with no swearing (was it aimed at people? or just stating how I felt!! ) as I have a crappy old slow phone I didn’t follow the link & thought it was to Ians other subject of a seal for the roof, so in my mind, made the reply’s less helpful than they were.
My second post was as soon as I’d walked in the door still didn’t follow the link, (my mistake) but I still think the reply’s offrd no helpful advice..

If I was as easily offended as some I’d ask for a retraction… GTvr said:

Presume that’s aimed at mine… A roof stops rain getting in.. I don’t put mine on for the aesthetics... As stated, a split roof sit on top of the contents so no unpacking, its not about space in a Chimp..GTvr said:
