My Chim is in need of a new Outrigger - can anyone recommend someone around South London/Surrey/Kent/Sussex who :
1/ is reputable,
2/ offers good value for money and
3/ will clean up the remaining chassis ahead of sale.

I have heard a huge range of prices for outrigger work - hence my concern.

Thanks in advance.

Just bung a cherry bomb in if you have one lying around; apparently they are indistiguishable from a tube hehe

Apparently Fernhursts can do a body-on outrigger replacement.

Offords did mine, both sides, great work with body on.

Also great train service to/from London or they can load you a SAAB.

Probably quite cheap, but just make sure the outriggers aren't hidden in an old silencer box when you get it back!whistle;)

Cost me about £1700 for full both sides, as they were absolutely shot on a 98 450 Chim.

Really impressive workmanship.smokin

Hi Jules,

In my opinion doing a 6" body lift is the best way of repairing the outriggers. I've just finished doing a whole body off exercise and it was hard work. From what I have heard and what I have experienced, you can remove the 14 or so bolts that hold the body to the chassis, lift the body and cut/weld in new section of steel tubing relativley easily.

If your intending on selling the car, is there any point repairing it? If you get someone else to do it, you'll not get the money back in the sale of the car that you put in to repair it.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for all your advice - all taken on board, and I have done some research into prices with 4 places now. I've heard that some can weld without lifting, by going down through the floor! Seems like a weird idea, saving the ££'s and presumably not a problem?! Anyone got any pointers on this?!

Last nibble I had wrt sale, was let down by an inspection - car reported A1 by Rob Ingleby apart from the chassis, and so I am keen to put that right, put the price up a bit and advertise as having been Ingleby'd. Alas, I don't think the market is such right now for people to buy ... and get work done!

FYI - Tower View in North London was recommended by Rob Ingleby as being able to fix without a lift at a reasonable price - and indeed, they have come in cheapest, with a quote of £650 for repair + a further £130 for cleaning, painting and waxoyling the rest ... + the VAT, of course. At least a few hundred cheaper than the rest.

The weld without removing the body is usually done from below. They put a 'V' section tube in, weld from inside the V section then fill in the lower section.

Correction to prior post : Top Gear (Walthomstow) is the place Rob has seen outrigger work from before, Tower View Race Services is different : but they have done this many times before + were able to offer pick up/drop service for an extra £80.
Will let you know the outcome.

Offords did mine......all four corners, centres were fine.

It works out to be around £300 per corner, and you need only have done what needs to be done.
Take the car there and they will give you a fair price for a very good job.

It was better than I thought it would be.

And, nice people to talk to as well. Just remember, they are in this to make money, and they do this job on the outriggers which saves you a arm and a leg!

Some places are just ripping people off by saying you might as well have the whole car done sir! as it will pay in the long run? 'No it won't, unless you keep it for ever' Skinflints motoring guide.

Just work out what the cars worth before you go down the £4,000 body off job.

Good luck.
