Hi - sorry for all the questions... my introduction to TVR ownership is proving hard work.

Please could someone confirm whether the Rover V8 as fitted to Chimaeras (the 450 crossbolted) used standard Range River hydraulic lifters (part number ERC4949 I think).

Cheers

I think they did, but I think they are only good for around 5500 rpm beyond that they suffer from pump up, thats why some go for the Rhodes ones.

As standard they would have been fitted with standard RR lifters, but 'high rev' lifters are available and often fitted when the cam is replaced. You can also get Rhoads lifters which give you varying cam timing at different revs, but these are rarely used and if you have them you'll have noticed the loud clattering noise they produce at idle.

I've used rhoads lifters in the past - wouldn't again

Yes they do work as advertised but by Christ do they make a racket especially on a hot restart, everyone thinks your engine is k'ned

That would explain my noise then! I have had the cam replaced and they put in Rhoads lifters. I hate the noise though. What would you recommend instead. It has a standard cam so not looking for anything specific, just better than the RR ones but not as noisy as the Rhoads! smile

The stock RR ones are as good as it gets, why have you Rhoads lifters on a stock cam grind?thing is your not going to be able to just slip in a new set of lifters on your existing camfrown well not unless you want fairly rapid failure of both.

Thanks for the reply. When I had the cam replaced the garage that completed the work automatically fitted Rhoads lifters when the replaced the cam as they believe they are better.
I understand that I cannot just put a new set of lifters in now as they have worn in together. I was asking out of interest and in the event that if it needs doing again that I make sure I don't have the rhoads lifters fitted again.
I don't think I can do anything about it now, especially as money is a bit tight! frown

hi, ive been through all this . its not the lifters..i have piper lifters in mine and the noise is worse when the engine is on load .ive been told by v8d that there is wear in the ports caused by high mileage, not warming the engine up or bad oil .i dont think anything can be done about it unless you have a new block

Well mine only has 25k and I bought it with 7k on the clock, so I hope not! smile
The original cam went because the pre-load waasn't set correctly when the engine was built leading to premature cam wear.

Hopefully the noise I can hear which seems to get worse when the car gets up to temperature on a hot day is just the rhoads lifters.

Thicker oil will help shut them up, try a 15W50 or something similar

Dont panic Ads,my car as gone round the clock with none of this so called tappet/lifter bore wear problem thats been mentioned confused and the motors original, the only way these would wear that rapidly is if you had heavily contaminated oil going thru the motor for long periods, and if thats the case it would not just end with worn lifter boreseek

Thanks TD. I think I am already using a 15W-50 Mobil 1. I'll check the bottle when I get home! smile

I think its just the Rhoads tappet noise I can hear, I'm just very sensitive when it comes to noises! biggrin
