hi all, this is my first post on here, although i have been reading it for a few weeks now and am amazed at the info i have found out. i am looking at buying a a chim, i have about £15-16k to spend on one and as it will be my main car just wondered how many of you run your car all year round and what problems you have encountered in the winter, is it a viable proposition to run one everyday all year round or not?

thanks

welcome.

You don't want a Chim, you want a Griff...

Sorry! Far to early in the thread to start that one

Plenty of people run TVRs as their main or only car. My Griff has only done 44,000 miles in the last 30 months from the heatwave of ten days ago to the snow of midwinter - so I can't comment! They are better for being regularly used and you keep a all the time too!

2nd all of that (except the buying a Griff rubbish ) I used mine as my only car for about a year doing a short 10 mile commute in the week and hooning at the weekend, it will cost you more to run than a EuroBox but you'll have a lot more fun

Well I have done just under 12,000 since March in mine.. Other than the dash board cracking to peices in the recent heat wave the car is going strong.. I am just waiting for the winter months now..

We run our Chimaera all year round.

If well maintained its a reliable car...the maintenance WILL cost you more than you think - but is reasonable for a car of its performance.

Its fantastic in Spring, Summer and Autumn.

In the depths of winter the light weight, rear wheel drive, massive torque, more bhp than grip all combine to make it a handful...doable..but you'll need to learn real restraint with the right foot.

It is also useless once its icy. I had to abandon the bugger at the bottom of our hill last year. Finally got it up by having two mates push it whilst I feathered the throttle...

Don't be put off - its absolutely brilliant - but come winter it can be a pain in the a**e some days.

I've used mine all year round. As mentioned, when it's icey that's when things get tricky. Rain is fun though

I``ve only had mine a fortnight and i fully intend using it all year round, except when there`s a chance of ice on the black stuff.(come on global warming!)
I bought her to be my main car and the wife can use the voyager(bus)to her hearts content. Now i`m used to the chim, i really don`t want to drive any other motor (aston martin excluded).I bought a little hood cover for her as the garage has been converted into a room. She looks quite sweet and snug at night.May have to invest in a full cover when winter comes.Or will i?

18months in my chim. don't like to think about the servicing costs - hideous. dunno, maybe i have been unlucky, but i've covered about 20k.
would recommend a garage at night, and a hood/windscreen cover for when you are at work, simply because it's much nicer getting into a dry car, but when you are actually driving it the wind takes away water etc.
use rain-x on the windscreen, as the wipers are cr@p otherwise, and get some high output headlight bulbs for the winter.
also recommend that you think about the various cooling fan mods available if you sit in traffic for any length of time. i've just put an extra relay in mine to run one fan ( switched off the original supply and fused, using 35A cable, and taking the power off the starter motor ), and the second fan now goes like the clappers! sems to have improved things anyhow, as i was getting through quite a few of the original ( slow blow, available from dealer/specialist only ) fuses, and these are about £2 a pop ( pun intended )

otherwise these cars are ideal for commuting. idiot on your tail? burn off, pull over, let him through. idiot in front? wait for your opportunity, and boot it past.
and of course, everyone likes tvrs

Yep, Had mine since Jan, (test drove it in the snow, 1st 2 weeks of ownership in the snow), and use it daily.

No problems at all in 7 months.....(touch wood).

Keep it oiled and watered, make sure the hood is waterproofed (Fabsil or similar), and just go out and have fun..........

Used mine just about every day for the past 18 months - 20 minute trip through London traffic and a spurt up the A40 - that's my boy!

Trouble free - just uses a bit too much fuel on short trips!

Used mine everyday since I picked it up at the end of March. No probs (touch wood) other than the maintenance comes around more often. Just prepare to be stared at by everyone.

15000 in 1 year in my previous Chimaera - no particular problems to speak of. Full cost breakdown in profile.

Yep

Same here. Wifes daily driver.

Since May - New rubber (on car!), Master cylinder seals, Radiator, New master amd now the clutch MAY be on the way out..

Still worth it. Just at that age I think (40K)

Use mine (95 4.0HC Chimaera) every day for "social, domestic & traveling to place of work"
Well actually it gets used more in the winter when I don't feel quite so safe on the bike (but getting more confident).(25k miles in under 3 years now with 76k miles on clock IIRC)
