Am I right in thinking this fuse prevents the alternator from overloading the electrical system if there is a fault?

I believe that their sole purpose in life is to cause confusion and concern amongst us all. Creating havoc just when you thought things were ok, and then hiding in the most ridiculous inaccessible place a fuse could possibly be.

... or maybe not ?

You're both right. It protects the electrical system from a faulty alternator and the alternator from a faulty electrical system.

But in reality all it does is fail at the least opportune moment and leaves you stranded.

Ah but remember there are 2 of them in each TVR, one just behind the battery box and the one under the engine, ah the joy of finding them and changing them every now and again.
