Hello to all

I am trying to figure out why my occasional misfire has now turned into very reluctant starting, black wet plugs and inability to idle warm or cold, despite new HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm

Stepper motor is clean

Does anyone have a fault code reader i could borrow or rent for a week or know how I could get my hands on one??

Thanks

Matt

There is usually one for hire in the classified ad section.

I've got one you could probably borrow, but I bet it'll be the noodle spec wiring over the top of the engine going to & from the coil/ignitor unit. It'll be all crinkly from the heat.

Matt, as posted above.
I have had the same problem which was occurring about once every couple of months.
I'd be sitting at the lights and the tickover would suddenly drop so low it would stall without blipping the throttle and there would be a stink of fuel. Also if the car was left for ten minutes or so after a run it would not start or would start but only run on five or six cylinders.
Fitted new coil, dizzy cap, rotor arm, the lot. It would go away after fiddling round the coil area, but then re-appear a few weeks later.
So yesterday I removed all the crappy wiring from around the coil and fitted new spade crimps and cleaned all the coil spades and the ignition amp mini timer connector.
Now it runs like a dream and ticks over perfectly and starts everytime on ALL cylinders.
I must admit I may renew all the engine bay wiring soon as it's all gone very brittle over the years
and should only cost buttons to replace.
Hope this helps.
Paul.

Thanks for all the advice, it seems that the LT coil wiring may well be the culprit as cleaning it up seems to be helping.

Anyway I gave up and dropped it at Trimar (former TVR centre in Barnet) this morning as it started perfectly but still wouldn't idle.

I will let you alll know what happens as it may be of use to someone, this kind of problem seems quite common!

Just to let people know, it turned out to be a defective rotor arm, seems the new one was no better than the old!
