Could someone help my thinking about an experience yesterday?

Considerable consistent large roundabout speed (near limit of adhesion), followed by flick onto motorway slip road up to the motorway. These are the conditions in my Chimaera 500 yesterday when I entered the M62 near Huddersfield.

My issue is that when I looked in the rear view mirror - about 200 ft behind at the exit from roundabout onto the inclined entry slip road, I saw a cloud of light coloured smoke lingering.

Having spent several trackdays in another car and experienced oil surge I was wondering if this could be the explanation? In the past I had to remove oil from an xe 2.0 vauxhall inlet system on our Mk1 Cavalier, after slight overfill and enthusiastic cornering at Elvington airstrip.
However the TVR showed no additional signs 200 ft from the smoke and all the way home. The oil pressure was good as usual and the level looks fine.

I am sure I felt no tyre slip during the entry to the slip road.

Any thoughts on the smoke???

Phil.

Could be a simple as a slight oil leak being flicked onto the exhaust when cornering at speed. I have had a car do that before.

No sign of any rubbing of tyre against anything?

I see where you are both coming from - thanks.

The oil leak I would understand if the garage floor had some evidence but none in the last 2 years. Still the forces could have created something perhaps.

The tyre rubber could be an explanation - however I have hard springs with Gaz gold shocks at very hard settings which might prevent normal amounts of roll. I looked at the arches and the outside tyres (Drivers side) just now, but no evidence of rubbing seen.

If oil surge occurs in these engines, how does the oil get into the combustion chambers? (As mentioned this may not be what happened but I am interested to understand).

Phil.

Had you been driving it enthusiastically before that ?? These engines do have a habit of not getting rid of the oil from the top of the engine if revved hard for prolongued periods, could have sucked some oil down the valve guides ??

Many moons ago, I went on a track day with some friends, one of whom had a Chim, he took it around the small track (Haynes) and it constantly gave out white smoke on cornering, something to do with the wet sum.wink

Don't worry about it, but obviously to be on the safe side, keep an eye on it.

Hi - no I hadn't driven hard continuously , just a few miles of heavy throttle before the roundabout.

When you say oil down valve guides - is this something that happens in extreme cornering with the RV8 or is it unusual?

I'm not worried but thanks for the comment - more a case of trying to understand issues and syptoms for future reference. Perhaps a trackday could be more enjoyable if I new the likely levels of oil smoke from certain circumstances.

Cheers for the feedback - any more would be great.

Cheers
Phil.

It sounds to me like you were spinning the unloaded wheel, which is very easy to do especially if your LSD is a bit tired. It is suppressing how mutch smoke just a little wheel spin can create. Mine did it quite frequently until I swapped the LSD for a Quafe, now it overseers instead because it is diving the loaded wheel instead of spinning the unloaded one.
