Speedo Stuck at 29,999 - Why?

No point in replacing it the new one will do the same. Over time it will start to work again just think of it as free miles....Quite a few PH'ers have said that they usually roll over eventually.
Both of my Chim's odometers stuck at the same mileage as yours.
My current one released after a sharp bash on the dashtop.
The first one didnt and needed removal and repair (about £120 I recall).

Have recently purchased a 98 Chim, it came with the usual speedo fault of the main odometer sticking, which due to a poor repair in the past could not be cured by the usual thumping.
I was a little put off using speedy cables due to the long wait often suffered by others here, so after much searching found an alternative.
Sent the speedo to him on Tuesday had it back on the Friday!
Unit was well repaired & reset to the actual mileage at very reasonable cost of £60.
If anyone else needs their odometer sorting out I would recommend contacting John here..

I had my speedo repaired by speedy and it took a month maybe there quiet.

I find that when my speedo does this a 20 or 30 yrs in reverse sorts it out! I found this out reversing out of my parking space one day when the speedo had stuck on one of the 999s. Now done 30,000 in 5 and a half years.
The 500 is stuck on 39,999 and has been for about 15 months. As the last MoT had 39,999 they had to put 40,000 this time!
Tried all the recommended methods but none work. When it was on 29,999 I took the dash out and tapped it with an old toffee hammer until it moved, went for a slow trip around the block whilst Mrs FFG held the dashboard and it clicked over. Can't be ar5ed doing it again. Speedo is still OK.

Having had my speedo stick at 49999, I got it repaired by a local dealer, then the same thing occurred in July this yaer at 59999, in despair I was going to get it repaired again nuntil i read this post. Punched the top of the dashboard on the way to work on Wednesday, hey presto I have a working speedo, thank you.
The reason "why" it does this is the coupling between the motor and the counter mechanism is only a push fitted spring. This eventually loses grip (maybe as stuff migrates out of motor along shaft?) and slips under the highest load. Any major 9999 changeover causes the biggest loading on the motor. A little lock-tite on manufacture would have sorted this out
