Hi Guys and Hello Gals,

Whilst sat in the long traffic jam this morning waiting on the dualcarriage way to turn left at the approaching island, what should come hurtling down the outside was a rather amazing sounding Cerbie popping and banging v.loudly as it braked for the island.

I've never heard my Chim sound that good. So the question is are Cerb's louder than Chim as a rule and is ther any way of easily increasing the noise more to the point pops and bangs out of the Chim.

Different engine for a start... so sound slightly different.

Easiest way to get pops and bangs is to remove the exhaust baffles...

Beat me to it Podie.

UIL9794, in my experience Cerbs are louder, but I haven't got a convincing reason for this.

Some people think a tuned 500 exhaust sounds better

By removing the baffles will that make the note more tinny, and also will it make the car generally louder or more so just on deceleration.

I have a 95 chim which is noticeably louder than others, and also pops and bangs somtimes when slowing. I was told this could be a) baffles removed, or b) it may have a sports exaust.

For me it just seems to add to the smile affect.

Ruby has a 3qtr sports exhaust. Makes the burble sound richer and bassier, nowhere near tinny! It was a straight-through job, covering up just 3 quarters of the baffles...the bangs and pops are luvverly...accelerate hard, then let off the gas pedal a bit and feather it slightly. Have perfected it to right before I get to tunnels and underpasses

Great fun that isn't it...?!?

Also effective as you pass groups of people on the pavement...

Do they test for noise at an mot then? Never seen anyone with a db meter behind the car, and they'd have to have a book stating the normal volume for the model of car as well? And what about factory sports exhausts?

What is the difference between having the baffles removed and a pipe welded in, and a sleeved exhaust or is it the same thing??

I’m in two minds weather to get the baffles taken out, will I lose the deep sound? And as asked by UIL9794 "By removing the baffles will that make the note more tinny"??

It is not tested but the police are getting hotter on noisy cars and have been known to pull over cars. Strictly speaking it fails the type approvals but this isn't covered by the MOT. They don't need to measure it directly as their opinion is good enough BTW. Mainly Max Power brigade and I am sure a lot depends on how the car is driven.

If you want to go on a track, there are quite strict limits that many sports exhausts will not meet without additional silencing.

There is also the perennial problem that with some of these cars there is a performance lost but this is difficult to predict. They can also break health and safety regulations/recommendations for hearing exposure.
