funny engine noises.....?
Discussion
I seem to have developed a strange noise coming from around/in the engine, its a late 500, sounds like a cross between tappets and someone having swapped the V8 for a turbo diesel.....does vary with engine speed but does not match the revs by any means...., the strange thing is when you start the car from cold it sounds fine, and get worse as the car warms up, sounds very rough, almost like a cerb just after starting up, and its beginning to get a little embarressing...
any thoughts???
anyone?
anyone?
voodoo economics...
no.?.

thing is appart from the noise, the car runs fine, oil pressure is normal as is temperateure...I'm wondering if it might be a manifold/exhaust gasket, as the metal heats up the gap expands , causes noise, have a small vibration noise as you go through the gears at 1800rpm as well, seems to come from left hand side of car, front middle direction, isnt that the side that the exhaust is routed? i think that might be a heat shield or other exhaust vibration, only lasts for a second going up through the revs and only while in gear....
hmmm...
i thkn if it was oil starvation it woul d have gone pop by now, have had a long drove home after it started,
EMI, but why would the temperature sender cause that sort of noise? its quite noticable...
thanks for the replies...

Mine does that too
97 5 litre chimaera only done 19000 miles, read that this is quite common. they dont have an oil cooler and it gets very hot. When its warm it gets noisy, fine when its cold. What oil are you using? Try something thicker, I'm going to try some valvoline racing this week, see what happens.

Yes I know sounds silly, but try it on a quiet roundabout or something.
If it is then I am told it is oil starvation to the right bank rear of the cam. It seems the 0W-40(?) is too thin and 5W-50 is the oil to use.
Although I use the thicker oil in mine (only a baby 4.0) I still get a ticking type sound when the old girl is hot.
Do they all do that Sir?

My Chim 400 does exactly the opposite - a tapping sound when cold, settles as gets warmer - worried that after 31000 miles having already had the head gaskets done there was something more terminal going on there! also keep getting air in the coolant, makes a swooshy gurgling when right turning and the revs dropping - this hasn't stopped with the head gaskets getting done.
Any ideas of diagnosis?!?

Yes P1GNG. Low coolant level.
Had this some time ago, shortly before the radiator blew a hole in itself (sorry to be the merchant of doom).
However, soon after refitting the new one the noise came back, I made sure the system was properly bled at the radiator and no signs of it since. HTH.
Sorry to be the grim reaper and all but after a good let out a few weeks ago my 4.3 Griff developed a very similar noise (no it wasnt knackered exhaust gaskets). When started from cold it sounded ok. At 2k revs the noise could be heard within 200 miles it was permanent and louder. Answer = worn through the teftriding on one of the cam lobes (underneath is like chocolate!) New cam and followers later and all is well. If it is this, TVR power were by far the cheapest for the cam, shop around for the followers and gaskets.
Head gaskets was cos coolant getting into cylinders, my noise is only there on start-up, goes once warm and not there except on idle - someone's just said tappety noises don't behave like that! but will go to peninsular for next service and get the boys there to check it out - Brooklands has gone downhill since becoming bentley west country - not 'xpensive enuff car or summit!!!
