Smelly, smelly

Just got my car back on the road after a year, and after taking out the dizzy to change the oil pump. I've guessed the timing until I can get a garage to strobe it for me, it runs fantastic, but it absolutley stinks of gasses from the exhaust which get blown back into the cabin. Is my timing too advanced? Or is it just because it hasn't been used?
