Cannot see in the rain. The wipers are slow. Is this common to all TVR's?

Wipers are crap, not sure about slow though. There are two speed and I understand that they are standard parts-bin components so they should be no slower than any other car.

Get them checked out as to what the problems is - normally not that bad...

My car is the same year and has three wiper actions: Intermittent (delay adjustable between 7 and 12 seconds by the litte knob on the left of the steering wheel column), constant and then slightly quicker but not much. Worth checking your manual to see if your car has a different variation.

The problem with wipers on my car is that the passenger side wiper blade when parked does not sit fully against the screen due to its curvature. Has anyone solved this problem e.g. messing around with wiper arm or blade length ? Guess it's mainly cosmetic.

My guess is that the slowness is inherent in the design of the wipers and mechanism.

The motor is a standard part, they say. On a normal car it drives wipers through a 90 or 100 degree arc. Most chimeara wipers except recent ones go through an arc of something like 140 degrees. My guess is therefore that the gearing is reduced somewhat so that the motor has a chance (and clearly it's not much of one) to move the wipers the extra distance without expiring.

Does that make *any* sense? Perhaps I need more coffee?

Cheers for the info. There is the intermittent setting and the constant, but I have not found a fast constant setting. Will have a play later on....

If the wipers have to go through a larger arc it does make sense that they will be slower.

They clear the water/crap ok, but just not fast enough.

Someone ought to try and find a more powerful motor to see if this perennial problem can be fixed...

I think TVR may have done this for us. On the very latest models (approx '99 onwards) TVR changed the wiper motor. The wiper blades are no longer halfway up the screen when parked either. I was told they work much better. Perhaps someone with a new Chimaera can tell us more (if they've experienced an older model's wipers).

Dave,

As an alternative you could apply some Rain-X on your windscreen. Over 60 mph I stop the wipers when it's raining - magic ! Only my 2p...

rthierry, where can you get the rain-x from? Is it expensive? Is it any good at slower speeds, say 40 mph as thats about all I can do in the traffic around here!

The rain-x makes the rain bead up, below 60mph there is not much to persuade the beads to bugger off. After 60mph the wind resistance clears them as soon as they appear. I started using it years ago as a biker, where a shake of the head would clear the visor fine.

Rain-X - better than wipers IMHO.

Halfords does it, they also do their own which works well. Like the idea of a shake of the head on a bike to clear the drops, there's got to be a way of applying that to a windscreen .
