I took delivery of my 1st Chim back in June and absolutely love it, so much so that my girlfriend has buggered off thru neglect.

Anyway, the Chim has just salied thru its mot, but the tester noticed an oil leak at the back of the gearbox. It doesn't look major, but I have noticed a very small amount of oil on the garage floor back at home. It looks like the seal where the prop goes into the back of the gearbox.

Can anybody out there advise whether this is an easy repair or do I need to re-mortage my house?
The car is a Jan.96 'n'reg 4.0.

Cheers

It's not that easy. I normally wait until something more terminal happens and then address it. Keep an eye on the gearbox oil levels though.

Cheers shpub for the advice. I'll top up the gearbox oil and keep an eye on it, unless someone out there thinks it's more serious.

Have something similar on my 98 4L, was told to keep an eye on levels and leave it alone.

Apparently it's an excellent chassis lube system

Cheers yiw1393. Can someone walk me thru how to top up the gearbox oil? Bit of a novice but willing to learn from you guys. We don't want to see my chim broken down on the raod with a seized gearbox!

Its easy :

1. Get a copy of "The Bible" (See shpub's web site for details or TVRCC web site)
2. Jack the car up to be able to get underneath (jacking suggestions in aforementioned Bible) and place on axle stands
3. Remove filler plug. Top up 'til oil comes out of the filler hole. Replace plug
4. Remove car from jack/axle stands
5. Take car for test drive
6. Read the rest of the Bible and worry about all the other things that can go wrong

Cheers Bob,
Bible has been ordered.
You made this sound simple I guess I should stop worring about this little problem then.

It's quite a simple repair - exhaust off, propshaft off, replace seal, refit propshaft, top up gearbox oil, refit exhaust. Approx 1 hours work. Job done. No need to remortgage.

Did you see the leak for yourself?

Oil leaking from a number of places will migrate down the engine to this sort of postion, so before spending any money you need to check it out.

Common leaks are back of rocker covers, engine sump etc.
