Matt.
Sorry to hijack but I thought you (RaceBoy) were offered 10k from a dealer for yours? Seems to indicate the prices on the earlier cars on Pistonheads are just bargains! Speaking of which, have you taken a look at that yellow Cerbie yet (I decided against it and will pick mine up on Saturday)

Matt - look from the perspective of an average punter. We're talking ten year old cars that only cost about the same as, say, a Saab convertible back then and don't have an enviable reputation for reliability and quality. How much would you be prepared to pay for an 'average' example (i.e. one that might have a slight cosmetic flaw or two and could land you with an expensive bill shortly after you bought it) without being laughed at by your non-petrolhead mates or having your sanity questioned by your other half?
Or looking at this another way: back in 1993/4, a Chim was about half the price of a 911 - there's no reason why ten years on that should have changed significantly in favour of the TVR given the more universal appeal and reputation for quality of engineering of the latter. So in my book, the examples you mention are about right.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the reputation that TVRs are getting with insurance companies? I have just rung around for my renewal and people that quoted last year do not want to know about TVRs this year.
My driving record has not changed, I have not got younger and have not moved. You tell me?

I don't thing the market is going bonkers - although it does go quiet at this time of the year. However when looking at TVR prices (at any time of the year), it's all down to condition and mileage (plus one of the guys wants to sell to buy a 5.0, so is really "keen").
The first car is an insurance write off reading the advert carefully, and one of the three other cars I have actually seen and is in such poor condition ......

this is true..
The are plenty of abused sportscars out there, with quotes from garages running into £1000's sometimes so they just dump them privately, however every now and then a bargain does come up......
A saying goes..
"If it's too good to be true then it usually is"
Thats' whay trying to find out as much about a sportscar as possible and knowing the previous owner is a great assistance if you can do it.
Lets face it good cars sell what ever the weather, if a buyer can see a great car, a good colour etc then do not be put off by the weather.
A bad car will only be bought on price
IMHO
It's up to the buyer to find out which car is which...and that is the biggest problem for everybody.
If a TVR customers goes to part exchange his/her car at a non TVR dealer then a swift kick in the cherries may be the figure...as most dealers aren't buying stock around this time after selling new car and taking in part exchanges...so they stick £500-1000 on the price and stick it in classified sections free for a week or two in many cases

Insurance is Risk and bought in "profiles" If "your" profile doesn't fit i.e. you are, say 45 and profile is for 35 to 44. They are not going to give you a quote. Finding the cheapest really is about asking different companies until you "fit" a profile!! Happy to be corrected and, no, the only thing your Insurance Company is really interested in is "profit against Risk". Happy motoring. Trev McM

quite true mr agger, i seem to recall that I bought the Chim off you while it was pissing down on a wet sunday afternoon in December 2002! (great way of checking whether the car leaks!!) I was very gentle with the load pedal that afternoon!

I would say as a general rule if you are under 50 the older the better as far as insurance companies go.
I just got a lot more TVR
this time round compared to last year. Ivan
