Recently when I have been driving my Chim, I get a sort of low 'gurgling' or trickling noise from somewhere in the cockpit when I accelerate from low revs. It sounds a bit like someone sucking water through a straw. It only seems to happen in 1st and 2nd gears (although it may be I can't hear it any of the others). My first thought was that it might be water trapped in the ventilation pipes but as it doesn't seem to be affecting the car at all, I have resisted the temptation to take the dash apart. Any ideas?

Yeh, i wondered about that. I have the same sound but it only seems to happen for the first 10 mins or so and then goes. I too have no idea what it is but mine i thought sounded like it was coming form the passenger side somewhere?

I have recently noticed the same thing on my Chimp 500. I feel that it is on the pasenger side somewhere. To me it sounds like ait trapped in a cooling system or something. Anyway, the result is a gurgling noise as the water/air bubbles through some pipework. From the tone of the gurgles, I don't think we are talking very small diameter pipes so my idea of cooling system pipes seems to fit the bill. Anyone got any ideas ? Phil

Good to know I'm not alone! I reckon mine's also on the passenger side.

Hurray! At last somebody else with the same noise.... It is definitely in the passenger side of my 40. 96 Chim and seems to be mostly during initial acceleration. It sounds to me either like water gurgling or a fan rotor knocking on something. Would love to know what it is - could this be the reason why my £2000 A/C system seems to make no difference? The water pipes for the heater go down to the passenger footwell. We all have an air pockets in the heating system plumbing I have no idea how to fix it. I've tried bleeding the system loads of times but I still have gurgle. Apparently you have to do some bleed trick with the two heater pipes in the engine bay, on the driver side bulkhead.

Just got this off Peter Beech's worksop notes: "Footwell Gurgles Internet Mailing List Nov 96 ... While we are on the subject of strange noises from my griff. There is also the sound of water moving in the passenger footwell, it is not wet, and the noise is intermittent, is it the heater? David Donnan Internet Mailing List Nov 96 The water noise is indeed the heater pipes and/or the water valve for the heater. The noise gets better if you keep the water level topped up and get the heater valve replaced every couple of months (bitter, moi?). Unfortunately, if you mess around with the pipes too much you're likely to get water leaking into the relays/fuses. Gary Walsh Internet Mailing List Nov 96 The heater pipes run through the footwell above and to the right of the battery, the noises may be due to air in the system so I suggest you turn the heater on and run the engine (from cold) with the filler cap off for a few minutes. Nick Collins "

Sorted it fill expansion tank 3/4 & tightend blue cap. fill swirl tank to threads & replace top. Start engine until warm. sloooowly undo swirl tank & keep topping up. When coolants starts coming out, stop engine, & top up again. Problems gone, no more gurgles. Oh, park on a slope if you can, nose upward.

".....turn the heater on and run the engine (from cold) with the filler cap off for a few minutes" I tried this at the weekend and it seems to have worked!
